Stirring the White House honey pot
Why, when I read the name - actually, pseudonymn - "Jeff Gannon," do I see the name Craig Spence?
It's unlikely you've missed this 24-hour flap, but in a nutshell, so to speak, here's the story. At least as it appears for mainstream America's tabloid consumption, which is the only way most Americans will see it.

On his TalonNews Web site, Gannon had written that liberals were out to get him because he's a white conservative man who owns a gun, drives a sport-utility vehicle and is a born-again Christian.
"The issue here is whether someone with connections to male prostitution was given unfettered access to the White House and copies of internal CIA documents. For a family values administration, that's pretty creepy," said John Aravosis, one of the bloggers chasing the story.
Well no; not quite. The issue is far more serious than the creep-factor for a - give me freakin' break - "family values administration."
Gannon wasn't much of a journalist, not even of the pretend kind. Not much of a White House shill, either. Though the Bush team couldn't fault him for his slavish devotion to the party line, he wrote for the very limited cyber readership of "TalonNews," which appears now to have folded up and blown away, like every good cut-out once its cover is blown. The White House does not want for friends in corporate media with far greater reach. And the CIA's Operation Mockingbird, we recall, served up far bigger fish than the likes of Gannon. So why did the virtual one-man show of TalonNews receive such pride of place?
To answer that, we should probably ask the rhetorical question: what other purpose could a male prostitute possibly serve in the White House press corp? Or, I suppose, whom could he serve? (Wolf Blitzer had better be careful. His blustery defence of Gannon yesterday had the ring of someone protesting too much.)
Which brings us to that Craig Spence fellow.
Spence was a conservative lobbyist during the Reagan-Bush years. The New York Times called him "Washington's ultimate power broker." He was also running a gay prostitution ring which employed adolescent boys. As perks of the job, he treated his boys to after-hour tours of the White House. In The Washington Times of August 9, 1989, Spence "hinted the tours were arranged by top level" persons, including Vice President Bush's National Security Advisor Donald Gregg, whose name also figures prominently in the October Surprise story. The paper added that "Spence, according to friends, was also carrying out homosexual blackmail operations for the CIA."
David McGowan writes that one of the White House tours "occurred just after Spence stopped by the Nightline studio to see his friend, Ted Koppel. Spence reportedly introduced Koppel to a 15-year-old boy, whom Koppel later claimed Spence had introduced as his son. Koppel though had been a close friend for over 20 years and surely knew that Spence did not have a teenage son."
Any wonder why this scandal - a sex scandal, even - died one of the quickest and quietest of deaths? Only briefly, and not everywhere, was it was front page news. As when it broke, on June 29, 1989:

It should probably be noted here that it wasn't until November of that year that Spence's body was found in a Boston hotel room, his death ruled a suicide.

Spence had been subpoenaed by a grand jury but had not yet been called to appear. As it turned out, very few witnesses ever did appear before that grand jury. Spence had also reportedly agreed to provide Penthouse magazine with “lurid details of Washington’s bisexual wonderland.” His story, needless to say, was never told.
Penthouse didn't get its story, but Spence left a legacy of questions, which have been soundly ignored by virtually everyone in a position to answer them. For instance, this one, raised by The Washington Times after his death:
Mr. Strasser, according to the witness, also asked during the private discussion and before the grand jury about the gift by Mr. Spence of an expensive Rolex watch to a U.S. Army sergeant. The sergeant, who also participated in the July 3 White House tour, allegedly was asked by Mr. Spence for information on Delta Force, a special forces counterterrorism unit based in Fort Bragg, N.C.
"They asked me what I thought Spence wanted to know about the Delta project," the witness said. "I said it could mean he was just interested in the young guys there or something else."
We should also note that Spence was an associate of Lawrence King, whose own juvenile prostitution ring enjoyed special privileges and the protection of authorities. King ran it out of his Franklin Credit Union, and in the course of its whispered history, implicated prominent Republicans in Nebraska, Washington and elsewhere in the sexual abuse of minors.

According to a Washington, DC investigative journalist who researched the Spence ring, "The way we discovered Larry King and this Nebraska-based call boy ring, was by looking through the credit card chits of Spence's ring, where we found King's name." Look at two companies, "Dream Boys" and "Man to Man," both of which operated under another service, "Bodies by God."
The Gannon scandal may not be that he was undeserving of accreditation, or a shameless cheerleader, or even a prostitute. (It ain't for nothing that members of the press are called "media whores.") The scandal may be that "Jeff Gannon" was a honey pot: a lure, floated in the press pool by the White House to compromise persons of influence. Something Gannon, or rather Jim Guckert, certainly was not.

Mr. Bush met Mr. Reid earlier this week at the summit in Monterrey, Mexico, just after the President's breakfast with Mr. Martin.
Mr. Reid was not initially in the hotel room where the two leaders and their closest advisers met, but was called in to brief the Prime Minister at the end as the group waited for the media.
Mr. Bush wandered over during Mr. Reid's chat with the Prime Minister. Mr. Reid introduced himself and shook hands with Mr. Bush.

This is true. Mr. Reid handles a number of files and performs a number of different duties, depending on the issue and the day.
The President chuckled. “Well, you got a pretty face,” he told the surprised Mr. Reid. He wasn't done. “You got a pretty face,” he said again. “You're a good-looking guy. Better looking than my Scott anyway.”
This is true. His Scott has a receding hairline and is on the chubby side, while Mr. Martin's Scott has a full head of hair and is quite fit.

Firstly, very nice catch.
Secondly, as to why/against whom:
Information is capital (as money is capital), and capital is apolitical and amoral, at least until it is put into action.
A honey pot could/might have been floated out there by anyone, though obviously for the purpose of 'generating capital' if not to be used now, then sooner or even later. Until it goes bad, it's just good to have a lot of capital lying around, and it's good to always be generating some.
Because, I guess, you can never be too thin or too, uh, cut (?)
Honey pot yes, but not in the sense meant. This was not about getting dirt on people, the Rove WH already has the dirt on everyone. This was a trap.
This guy Gannon was not discreet, he was called upon repeatedly, asked stupid questions. In other words he begged the press corps to asked who the fuck this guy is, why is he getting privaledges, etc etc. Begged for someone (who in particular?) to write an expose and claim some WH favoritism ala Monica. and then snap, the trap closes.
I do not think it is a coincidence that no one (of the press corp) spoke up. They are whores but not completely stupid. So who was targetted?

I do believe the David Brock of Media Matters (supposedly leading the charge against Gannon) is the same David Brock who claimed that Mena drug smuggling was an invented scandal in the BBC "Power of Nightmares" series. Definitely a guy with some undeclared interests.
Also, iirc, there were also 3rd world child sex rings involving "orphan rescue" organizations Covenant House & its Central American arm, Casa Alianza. Truly a global problem.

In summary, If I get it right, Jeff is arguing that maybe this gannon guy was:
1. Running a male prostitute ring, possibly in conjunction with blackmail ops to get dirt on Republicans for political gain/manipulation within the party.
2. The favors from this discreet service earned a guy with no journalistic credentials top security access within the whitehouse without using his real name.
Well, using Cathy O'Brien as the best first set of knowledge from which to extrapolate, this has all the appearances of Gannon being an MKUltra/Naomi or some other "handler" whose "journalist" profession is merely a cover.
Its likely an extension of the MK-programs that uses homosexual-themed programming. Prey on members in the GOP whose latent homosexuality is in direct opposition to what the party believes. Between this, cheney's daughter and the fact that every Republican president has attended Bohemia Grove (where boys will be boys... and girls), it's no wonder that the guilt complex could be used within the party to maintain control.
There is evidence that Hitler used latent homosexuality to maintain fear-based control - the fear of being "outed" and shipped off to the camps with the Jews. The party that is most against homosexuality is likely creating an atmosphere where any non-straight tendencies could compromise one's career. Sort of like the Catholic church - denounce pedophilia while harboring a great number of them. It's a great method of control, from their perspective.
I bet this is just the tip of the iceberg and it extends throughout the party. If the GOP could just come out of the closet, I bet they've advanced more gays to positions of political power than the democrats have.

I would like to point out two things:
1) In many Latin American cultures, Brazil in particular, you are not "gay" if you are not _entered_. This also holds true for many orgy type circumstances. You must keep this in mind when dealing with elite sex scandals and the like. I don't even think you can consider yourself "bisexual" in this situation. Therefore, Bush may have sex with men, but does not consider himself "gay."

I've briefly looked but couldn't get the item to come up, but your post reminded me of something I read at tbrnews.org a while back (and I don't know how reliable that site is).
But, in one of the "voice of the white house" sections, the "voice" talked about a guy who had been involved in that previous prostitution sting who had pictures and had made a friend who had sold these pictures to some Iranian connection to use as leverage against the U.S.
Maybe someone who has better skills at digging out information can find which voice of the white house at tbrnews had this information. I think it was sometime in November.
Anyway, I don't know if this could tie into the current situation in any way, or is only incidental in that various intel agencies use sexual blackmail.

Conspiracy of Silence, a documentary listed for viewing in TV Guide Magazine was to be aired on the Discovery Channel, on May 3, 1994. This documentary exposed a network of religious leaders and Washington politicians who flew children to Washington D.C. for sex orgies.

A copy of this videotape was furnished anonymously to former Nebraska state senator and attorney John De Camp who made it available to retired FBI Agent Ted L. Gunderson. While the video quality is not top grade, this tape is a blockbuster in what is revealed by the participants involved.

All the people that Craig Spence supposedly spied on were...conservatives. Why would a conservative spy on other conservatives?
Now, lets look at the link between Spence and King. We are told that credit card chits for both were seized at the same time. The raid that these were seized in was carried out because of complaints filed by someone about the misuse of their credit card. so, if your information is co-mingled with someone elses there must be a link. Using this logic that means if some waiter steals my credit card number and uses it to buy kiddie porn, I must also be linked to all the people buying the kiddie porn.
Most of these articles about Spence have been on the internet for ten years. I always love to see how then next person is going to twist the story some more.
