Discussion Board now open

And it's right here. (I'll add a link to it shortly on the sidebar.)

The quality of your comments has been exceptional, and I've thought it a pity that they be tied only to my posts. And while there are a lot of discussions boards, there are not many welcoming to these topics (and increasingly less so, it would seem). And those that are, are not of the quality your comments deserve. So I've created the RI discussion board.

Many of you send me terrific news items. I'd encourage you to post them to the board instead so they get a wider viewing. Most of what I write on the blog seems to be longer-form stuff, and if I don't happen to be writing about what you send me, the item may not get disseminated, and that's also been a regret of mine. Hopefully, the discussion board can be a good venue for that.

So let's see how it goes. Post away, if you like. Unless there's heavy trolling or spamming, moderation will be zero.

(And I should add, I've set the board up to accept unregistered users, in case you want to bypass that process.)

Ugh. Good luck with the board. I think it's a bad idea, myself, for many reasons. But then I hate message boards anyway and rarely use them. Too much crap to wade through in most, and they tend to distract and detract from the website affiliated with them. But if any site could pull off the exception and have a truly useful and interesting board, it would be this one!

way cool; don't often take advantage of boards in terms of posting but they can be a terrific source of links & references. Stimulating exchanges as well.

Grand idea, Jeff.

Fantastic Jeff. I swear, RI has become one of my favorites stops on the web, and I read it daily. It's rough living in a conservative state like NC, so every bit helps.

Boy, signing up for EZBoard was certainly creepy, particularly after your last post about not trusting anybody, including YOU. And what's with their wanting my name and birthdate? Now how do I unregister?

yep...i also vote no for using the board. first because i don't trust, kinda the definition of a conspiracy theorist and i try to stay consistant.

plus i'm on dial-up and get bogged down when i have to go through 2 extra pages. i use free web base email, and boards usually gets off track way too much.

Maybe "Jeff" sucked us in with all these cool ideas and speculation...and it turns out he is JEFF GANNON!!!! hehehe

I think Halolscan is good, not perfect. Thats why i like Atrios' comment area - sure there are the trolls who provoke weak people into distractions, but 90% of it is insightful comments. Sometimes it's even fun to read what the trolls say...and i think there is a way to ban abusers.

Who needs to remember more secret passwords??? not me!

I didn't like the registration process either, so I set it up to allow posts from unregistered users.

Now you tell us. I've received three emails from the freaking company already trying to sell me on their "expanded" services. I've written to them and asked to "deregister" but somehow I don't think it's going to be all that easy.

Ah crap, sorry about that. I'll edit the post to alert people to the unregistered option.

Don't forget that it is always better to use a forwarding service rather than give away your real email address. You can't beat spamgourmet's price: free, no strings attached. http://www.spamgourmet.com/ . There are also commercial alternatives (www.emailias.com).

Enjoy.

Well, interesting. You could also just post an open thread every now and again and it would serve a similar function. I'm of the opinion that blogs are actually an advance over discussion boards, maybe because of their emerging relationship to traditional media - no BBS or listserv ever got as much press as blogs have! Anyway, I'll probably add the board to my bookmarks, but post more often in the comments. Be interesting to see how it shakes out.

yeah, ezboard & the freaking registration process; when posted my e-mail address they replied that it had already been registered.

Huh? By whom, I wondered. Then got spammed on my account like no tomorrow. Gave up the idea of registering on their board.

Good to know (after the fact) Jeff set it up for unregistered postings.

ezboard says:

You must have an ezboard account to log in (If you have a local account, you must log in from the ezboard where you registered using the login link).
