From MindWar to FoxNews

FoxNews hasn't landed in Canada just yet - the CRTC only recently approved adding its channel to digital cable - so I was spared being scared recently by Fox military analyst, Retired General Paul Vallely. He told Fox house "liberal" Alan Colmes that "we are not going to permit" a Shia majority victory in the forthcoming theatre of a "free" election in Iraq. Worse, he said "Iran and Syria are next. It's easy to do.... Israel is (already) prepared to take Iran down."

Colmes, according to Newshounds, followed up by asking whether he thought a Judeo/Christian holy war against Muslims was such a great idea. Vallely replied "That's what's going on. If you don't understand that, then you don't get it."

Who is Paul Vallely, and why is he saying these things? Vallely is the senior military analyst for FOX News, having retired in 1991 from the US Army as Deputy Commanding General, US Army, Pacific. He served 32 years, more than 15 of them in Special Operations, Psychological and Civil-Military Operations. He's co-author of Endgame - Blueprint for Victory for Winning the War on Terror.

Vallely is co-author of another work that deserves mention.

From PSYOP to Mindwar: The Psychology of Victory is a military paper on psychological warfare, written by Col. Paul Vallely and Lt. Col. Michael Aquino in 1980. It was sent, writes Aquino, "to various governmental offices, agencies, commands and publications involved or interested in PSYOP." I think it deserves a closer read now, because it describes a psychological conditioning Americans may find familiar. And the fact that one of the authors is the senior military analyst for FOXNews may not be an insignificant trifle.

And who is Aquino? A since-retired Lieutenant Colonel, Military Intelligence, and special-forces officer. Also, for many years, an avowed Satanist, Nazi occultist (he conducted a black magic ceremony at Himmler's Wewelsburg Castle), and founder of the "Temple of Set." Aquino's name crops up in ritual child abuse cases which appear to have military-intelligence sanction for the purpose of trauma-induced mind control, notably the Franklin Credit Union and the Presidio scandals.

Aquino has said that "assorted cranks tried to make a public issue out of this paper just because of its catchy title.... That paper had no connection to MK-Ultra, nor Paperclip, nor any crazy Nazi experiments."

Even if one believes Aquino, and dismisses suggestion that he played a covert role in military mind control research (one of those "crazy Nazi experiments" carried to the United States courtesy Project Paperclip), the implications of "Mindwar" are chilling. And, I should think, rather familiar, to anyone wide awake in the Bush years.

A .pdf of From Psyop to Mindwar, with a new introduction, can be found on Aquino's "Temple of Set" website here.

Some excerpts:

In its strategic context, MindWar must reach out to friends, enemies, and neutrals alike across the globe - neither through primitive "battlefield" leaflets and loudspeakers of PSYOP nor through the weak, imprecise, and narrow effort of psychotronics - but through the media possessed by the United States which have the capabilities to reach virtually all people on the face of the Earth. These media are, of course, the electronic media -- television and radio. State of the art developments in satellite communication, video recording techniques, and laser and optical transmission of broadcasts made possible a penetration of the minds of the worlds such as would have been inconceivable just a few years ago. Like the sword Excalibur, we have but to reach out and seize this tool; and it can transform the world for us if we have the courage and the integrity to civilization with it. If we do not accept Excalibur, then we relinquish our ability to inspire foreign cultures with our morality. If they then desire moralities unsatisfactory to us, we have no choice but to fight them on a more brutish level.

...

Unlike PSYOP, MindWar has nothing to do with deception or even with "selected" - and therefore misleading - truth. Rather it states a whole truth that, if it does not now exist, will be forced into existence by the will of the United States. The examples of Kennedy's ultimatum to Khrushchev during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Hitler's stance at Munich might be cited. A MindWar message does not have to fit conditions of abstract credibility as do PSYOP there; its source makes it credible. As Livy once said: "The terror of the Roman name will be such that the world shall know that, once a Roman army had laid siege to a city, nothing will move it -- not the rigors or winter nor the weariness of months and years -- that it knows no end but victory and is ready, in a swift and sudden stroke will not serve, to preserve until that victory is achieved."

...

For the mind to believe in its own decisions, it must feel that it made those decisions without coercion. Coercive measures used by the operative, consequently, must not be detectable by ordinary means. There is no need to resort to mind-weakening drugs such as those explored by the CIA; in fact the exposure of a single such method would do unacceptable damage to MindWar's reputation for truth. Existing PSYOP identifies purely-sociological factors which suggest appropriate idioms for messages. Doctrine in this area is highly developed, and the task is basically one of assembling and maintaining individuals and teams with enough expertise and experience to apply the doctrine effectively. This, however, is only the sociological dimension of target receptiveness measures. There are some purely natural conditions under which minds may become more or less receptive to ideas, and MindWar should take full advantage of such phenomena as atmospheric electromagnetic activity, air ionization, and extremely low frequency waves.

Three things to note:

That MindWar "states a whole truth that, if it does not now exist, will be forced into existence by the will of the United States" sounds like the derisive snort at our "reality-based community," and what the senior White House aide told Ron Susskind:

We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality - judiciously, as you will - we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors … and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.

That this military paper, now 25-years old, spoke straightfaced of taking advantage of "atmospheric electromagnetic activity, air ionization, and extremely low frequency waves," suggests we ought to speak of the weaponization of these phenomena in a similarly serious fashion.

And that MindWar's co-author is the founder of the Temple of Set perhaps dissipates some of the smoke with which Vallely clouds America's fascist resource war as a "Judeo-Christian crusade."

Good find Jeff, thanks. I haven't read this yet, but it might be worthwile to check out the new Defense Science Board Report on Strategic Communication:

"We need to move beyond outdated concepts, stale structural models, and institutionally based labels. Public diplomacy, public affairs, psychological operations (PSYOP) and open military information operations must be coordinated and energized.http://www.acq.osd.mil/dsb/reports/2004-09-Strategic_Communication.pdf

Great find, Jeff. Yesterday I finished Absolute Friends by John le Carré. The last chapter nicely describes a psyop that resembles the ones described in the Valley / Vallely paper.

Side Note: Funny that you mention the Wewelsburg. In my early days I was there very often, as it is now a youth hostel not far from where I was born.

Thanks for the catch on the spelling. Googling the variants tells me it's wrong on Aquino's site - for instance, ithttp://www.disinfo.com/archive/pages/article/id1298/pg4/ - and the correct name is Paul E Vallely.

The time has come for a new Constitution, as the declaration of independence states "Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed". One of the core flaws of current u.s. law is the "santa clara decision" It is this bit of jurisprudence which gives corporations standaing as persons for the purpose of civil and criminal law in the united states. Repeal of this standing is critical to restoring the balance of powers. While it can be argued that such a lofty goal is impractical, there is little offered from blogs and or indy media in the way of solutions. Thus, the time for moving beyond reporting the sins of tyrany is upon us. We must provide more than just the story, we must provide a glimpse of how to correct the problem. Despite the formidability of the task, we must not shrink from its calling. In this way the idea of a just and civilized society can be born, nurtured and grown to maturity, even if it's formation and ratification takes more than the lifetimes of those now suffering under the current form of tyranny. If you believe as I do in the cause of freedom, the principles of America, then I urge you to endevour to the task mentioned. Further, it is not enough to call out the sins of the oppressor, it is your duty to offer a path out from under it. I have chosen non-violence, Because violent resistance plays into the tentacles of the hydra. In this way revolution and liberation will take longer, but will also be born of greater moral fiber, which will not be easily impuned, nor suffer the rages of propaganda.

No one has ever called Rachel Corrie a terrorist.

The time has come for the resurection of the Spirit of 76, and the courage to see it through!
