"Did I just say that out loud?"

The widowhood of every government - signs for all to see. - Leonard Cohen

From Florida, which enjoys Bush rule squared, comes this story of last week's ceremony naming Marco Rubio as the 2007-08 Speaker of the State Legislature.

Near the close, Governor Jeb Bush took the podium in the House chamber and spoke about his friend. No, not Representative Rubio, but Jeb's "Mystical Warrior Chang."

Bush's words:

Chang is a mystical warrior. Chang is somebody who believes in conservative principles, believes in entrepreneurial capitalism, believes in moral values that underpin a free society.

I rely on Chang with great regularity in my public life. He has been by my side and sometimes I let him down. But Chang, this mystical warrior, has never let me down.

Bush then unsheathed a golden sword and presented it to Rubio, saying "I'm going to bestow to you the sword of a great conservative warrior." The crowd went wild.

There may be a reasonable, though not entirely logical, explanation to this. "Unleash Chiang" was a popular phrase with the American far right in the early 1950s, and referred of course to Chiang Kai-shek, and the fantasy of "permitting" his Kuomintang to retake the mainland. It seems to have been handed down through the family: the Gainsville article recalls a Washington Post feature on the politics of tennis from 1989, which had George HW Bush threatening to "unleash Chang" as a method of intimidation.

I wouldn't suggest taking Jeb at his word here. We should doubt the public word of every Bush. I don't think "Warrior Chang" is Bush's occultic avatar or Secret Chief. But I think we should take note of his rhetorical flourish, for what it reveals of Jeb, and for what Jeb wants to reveal of himself.

We know a lot of nasty and weird things about the Bush family, and we have good cause to suspect a lot worse. What's more, they know we know. (Of course I'm not just talking about us, but I am also talking about us: I've logged a visitor to the blog using an IP assigned to the Executive Office of the Governor of Florida.) And they know, and we know, that these things will not be spoken in the mass media. And so they enjoy the liberty of winking at us. Like two years ago, when Jeb "joked" during a cabinet meeting that the people of San Francisco were "an endangered species, which may not be a bad thing. That's probably good news for the country." As the room erupted in laughter he added disingenuously, "Did I just say that out loud?" Like George HW Bush posing in bed with his granddaughters, a model of an Illuminati pyramid in his lap. Like Dick Cheney's delighting in his underground reputation as a conspiracrat. Like Jeb speaking matter-of-factly before a partisan crowd about his habitual summoning of a warrior entity. They know what signs they send. As many dynasties near the end of their runs, the rulers often feel so secure about their station that they lift the veil on their own weirdness to revel publically in their own exceptionalism.

And even the most mundane interpretation of the Chang story is alarming, for its depiction of the militant imagination of these people. They are bringers of swords and conflicts, and their victories are bloody. And the blood is our own.

When you hear someone with a crackhead daughter talking about 'moral values underpinning society' you have to laugh out loud. And when you hear a stock market 'pump and dump' aficionado talking about entrepeneurial capuitalism, my eyes roll a few times. Does the Bush family even care how ludicrous this all sounds to anyone with half a brain in their head?

It might be as simple as JB being just a low-grade moron who's repeating some esoteric allegorical crap he's heard at meetings with his handlers. You know, the way a 3-year old will copy something he's heard an adult say, and repeat it so that he may feel special, important and included.

But who knows? the reference is so arcane and bizarre to the circumstance, that it's hard to establish the meaning, much less the origin and intent. I really wonder what the relevance is in the big picture and how it would even affect us in the larger sense.

It's like the rantings of a drug-addled dictator or cult leader trying to incite the excited adulations of an alpha-state induced rabble.

Yanno the Bush family makes the Corleones look like the Waltons. The genogram of this brood is a study in so many kinds of pathology and dysfunction that the fact that they number one sitting (or biking) (p)resident, a former president and a governor really should make us all bloody embarassed.

Get the government we deserve indeed.

Well, I gotta go now. I have a trio of mystic warrior avatars, Wing Ding, Ding Dong, and Ping Pong, who have some advice for me. Wait...tuning in...let me share it with my homeys here on RI...they're saying...

Wing Ding: Buy low, sell high.

Ding Dong: Got any Ho-Ho's left?

Ping Pong: Third base.

Well, OK, they're not at the top of their game every day.

Do you have a link to where Jeb's Chang quote came from? It's pure gold.

What is Jeb up to?

He is signifying to his buddies in quack code.

Just as BushCo was signifying in their delayed response to NOLA.

These goons know what their saying. Anytime Dubya hauls off for vacation, I always wonder if some serious shit's about to happen. As far as I'm concerned, his vacations are always his way of throwing up a big ol' Bat Signal.

Shit, I don't want to know how far down the rabbit hole goes anymore...

I just use current events to work my mojo for whatever it's worth. Their signifying trips my pilot-light into high gear and sets my heart on overdrive to blast whatever good stuff I can into the ether.

That's right -- now I'm signifying!

Love out to my homies in all dimensions: let us magnify this goodness, and not just signify like those chump bullshitters -- despite the hell they cook up.

Can't touch this!

A tangential, possibly relevant observation: Chang Shambhala (or just plain Shambhala; "Chang" is the Hindu prefix) is a mythical, paradise kingdom supposedly located in Tibet.

The Theosophists were big proponents of Shambhala, considering it the abode of the "Secret Chiefs," occult beings who influence wordly affairs. Shambhala is also the root of many of the "hollow earth" theories and -- of course -- UFOs.

A few links:

http://esoterism.ro/english/mysteries-earth.php

http://www.mystae.com/restricted/streams/scripts/shambhala.html

All this probably has nothing to do with Jeb's invisible "Chang" buddy... but as we know, when dealing with the sprouts off the Bush family tree, it pays to scrutinize every word that rolls off their vile tongues.

Again, not to belabor this possible connection, but this paragraph perked up my ears:

In 1888, Blavatsky mentioned Shambhala in her main work, The Secret Doctrine, the teachings for which she said she received telepathically from her teachers in Tibet. She wrote in a letter that although her teachers were reincarnate “byang-tzyoobs” or “tchang-chubs” (Tib. byang-chub, Skt. bodhisattva), she had called them “mahatmas” since that term was more familiar to the British in India.

So Blavatsky had an occult teacher known as "Tchang" (pronounced "Chang"), too. Maybe relevant, maybe not.

For sure, it's symbolism. And symbolism that Bush knew the audience would recognise. (Afterall, it's reasonable to assume he did it for the applause).
I think Jeff's last para sums it up.

And I think Omega man is pretty spot on with the analogy of the three year old repeating something without understanding it but knowing it gets a favourable reponse. Funny in private, embarrassing in public.

It's gemerally the outer circle (the functionaries) that can't resist giving out the clues. Like the kid on the bicycle, "Look Ma, no brains"!
Did I just say that?

I’m betting that new baby is a good sleeper if you’re able to write at this level of excellence, Jeff. Terrific, spot-on piece - from Florida enjoying Bush rule squared, to the rulers reveling publicly in their own exceptionalism.

and the comments added so far are terrific, too. what a pleasure to be reading here tonight.

Jeff wrote, "they know we know".

That's what I was thinking when I saw GHWB with the evacuees and there was a young black boy that he leaned down to kiss (yes, kiss) and then glanced towards the camera as if to say "yes I know you know, but you also know there's nothing you can do about it". Anyone else see that?

I didn't see that particular, but I retained a photo clipping of the sociopath kissing a little 6-year old black girl on the mouth, back when he was "campaigning" for his initial installation. I remember thinking 2 things... One, how sick and inapproprately disturbing it was; and Two, what kind of mother would virtually pimp her child out to have a stranger kiss their baby like that on the mouth. I wish I could upload it for you all to see, it's totally creepy.

oh. yeah. the "little digs" are ever-more plentiful. i consider it a tool to measure the level of their sheer terror...going on the theory that the more frightened they are, the more they need to reassure themselves and each other..and being brazen is what they can come up with. they finally can't recognize their own "veneer-ing" is just that.

so the more i see things like Lockheed Martin commercials proclaiming "We never forget who we work for", and GHWB offering the victims of suffering...suffering he helped to ensure them... a free $3 entry to his personal museum as compensation...

the more frightened i know these dirty rotten scoundrels are.

let 'em laugh, for now.

it's that LAST laugh that nothing is going to stop me/us from having. oh, how sweet that day is going to be. even if i experience it from another timewarp. i'll know. and there's nothing they can do about it.

Does anybody understand why "Marco Rubio" is being initiated "as the 2007-08 Speaker of the State Legislature" in September of 2005? It doesn't compute. These freaks are obviously just coming out of the closet, this is bizarre, but hardly as strange as Reverend Sun's late night coronation as Messiah in the Senate office building...

Well, I can see two possible explanations both mentioned in a different ways. Many of their followers view them as leaders in their tribal accult and it has significant meaning to some and more likely, nothing to some of the followers but they wish to be in the loop so they laugh pretending to understand.

Or it could be they can say what ever they chuse because of previous evils they committed to become this tribal leader. They beleive that their weeknesses of mind and psychi are not strong enough to hurt them so expose themselves, to their brutal disadvantage. Then again people fall for it. I personally missed it.
