Peak Fascism
Hitler the brain-mole looks out of my eyes
Goering boils ingots of gold in my bowels - Leonard Cohen
You can find Nazis in the most unexpected places, and without looking too hard for them. In your own head and belly, for instance, as Leonard Cohen imagined in his early poem, "Hitler the brain-mole" ("My Adam's Apple bulges with the whole head of Goebbels"). They'll catch you unaware, if you're on the look out only for the corrupted Swastika, the black leather greatcoats and the twin lightning bolts of the SS. Because Nazis have another face.
They are also, like every advocate of extremism, idealists. And a significant portion of Nazi idealism is devoted to back-to-the-land fantasies of a return to folkish custom. A contemporary example is Satanic fascist Stephen Cox's "Arktion Federation" and his "Jarls of Baelder," which we discussed here.
This from the description of Cox's "awakening":
His simple, disciplined yet healthy and loving upbringing, together with the long childhood walks with his parents, and heroic, traditional and and [sic] adventurous games with neighbourhood friends in the farms, meadows and woods of the Cotswold hills of Gloucestershire and the [sic] also of the Somerset coast gave him the foundation for his intense love of landscape and Nature. This led him in time to a firm conviction born of experience, practice and historical perspective that if homo sapiens is [sic] to survive and evolve and in time become "god-like" then he must strive to now make himself a true husbandmann [sic] of his planet and a steadfast guardian and defender and friend of all creatures, animals, flora and fauna.
Mother Nature and wondrouis [sic] diversity of landscapes of regions of what her [sic] calls "Starship Earth" might be said to be be his first and primal teacher: and those few people who had an influence on him as a boy and youth have likewise had a deep love and dynamic relationship with Her.
This is idealized eco-fascism. It's conservation of a sort, and the sort is devoted to Nazi mythology. It can be a seductive mix to those who see the Earth's peril, but don't see the will to do something about it. Noam Chomsky thinks so. He's already been seduced by it:
Suppose it was discovered tomorrow that the greenhouse effects has been way understimated, and that the catastrophic effects are actually going to set in 10 years from now, and not 100 years from now or something.
Well, given the state of the popular movements we have today, we'd probably have a fascist takeover - with everybody agreeing to it, because that would be the only method for survival that anyone could think of. I'd even agree to it, because there's just no other alternatives right now.
Compounding the crisis, and further justifying a fascist takeover - you know, the one that's already happened - is Peak Oil. This isn't the place to argue the reality or fiction of the peak oil event. I've written elsewhere that I consider it to be both. The world will run out of petroleum and natural gas, and the masses will be denied cheap energy. Yet the exotic alternative of anti-gravitic propulsion apparently already exists, deep in the black budget of Defense establishments, and does not appear intended for the benefit of the bulk of humanity, at least as presently constituted. But that's beside the point of this post, which is Richard Heinberg's brain-mole.
There's a fascinating thread on the RI discussion board - and all credit to "proldic" for launching it and to "veritas" for running with it - detailing how the author of The Party's Over and PowerDown is, at the very least, leaving his thoughts vulnerable to infection by idealized fascism and even rarified Nazi mythology.
For instance, Heinberg approvingly quotes Virginia Abernathy, a Vanderbilt professor, proponent of eugenics and self-avowed "separationist." ("I would say that like many other people in most ethnic groups, I like to be with my own kind. So it would be accurate to say of me and many others, that I’m a separatist.") Heinberg says that America's Left academics are generally avoiding "ecological politics, a politics of reality." Abernathy, however, is someone who is "aware of the issues" as Heinberg understands them.
It gets weirder, and goes deeper.
In his essay "Back to Paradise," published in New Dawn, Heinberg writes about the myths of a lost Golden Age - about Tibet's legendary Shambhala, which obsessed Himmler's Ahnenerbe. (The Nazis sponsored a dozen expeditions to Tibet in attempts to uncover and exploit its occultic lore.) Veritas quotes Gerry Forster on the power and meaning of the myths of Shambhala:
From some of the accounts available, Shambhala appears to have been a centre of spiritual enlightenment, very reminiscent of James Hilton’s “Shangri-La”, but others say that it was a centre of occult power and arcane teaching. Its leader was thought variously to be either an evil, tyrannical Sorcerer-King or a God-like “Lord of The World”. We seem to be left with a choice as to which story we prefer to follow, and evidently which Path one desires to follow, too. The evil Left, or the good Right!
Apparently there were two factions (as in Hyperborea), one of which followed the Golden Sun, and the other the Black Sun. (The “Black Sun”, incidentally, was as prominent an emblem of the Nazi mythos as was the Swastika!) According to Jean-Claude Frére, author of “Nazisme et Sociétiés Secretès”, the people of Hyperborea, after migrating to the Gobi Desert over 6000 years ago, founded a new centre, which they named Agartha. It became a great centre of world learning, and people flocked there from all over the world to enjoy its culture and civilization.
However, a huge catastrophe supervened, and the earth’s surface was devastated, but the realm of Agartha somehow survived, under the earth. The legend continues to relate that, as with the original Hyperboreans, the Aryans now split into two factions: one group heading north-west, hoping to return to their lost Hyperborea, and the second going south, where they founded a new secret centre under the Himalayas.
Jean-Claude Frére concludes: The sons of the Outer Intellegences split into two groups, one following the “Right Hand Path” under the “Wheel of The Golden Sun”, the other the “Left Hand Path” under the “Wheel of the Black Sun”. The first preserved the centre of Agartha, that undefined place of contemplation, of the Good, and of the Vril force. The second supposedly created a new place of initiation at Shambhala, the city of violence in command of the elements and human masses, hastening the arrival of the “charnel-house of time.”
One devoted reader of New Dawn is Alexander Dugin, a Russian political theorist who calls it "one of the best sources of realistic information on the state of things in our world." Heinberg writes that Dugin is a thinker whose "ideas cannot help but resonate" in Russia.
Dugin's ideas spring from a mythos of occult Nazism:
Who we are, actually? Whose threatening face is appearing clearer day by day behind the paradoxical radical political current with the frightening name "national-bolshevism"?
The mankind has always had two types of spirituality, two paths — "Right Hand Path" and "Left Hand Path". The first one is characterized by the positive attitude to the surrounding world; the world is seen as harmony, equilibrium, good, peace.... The second path, the "Left Hand Path", sees all in an inverted perspective. Not dairy tranquility, but black suffering; not silent calm, but torturous, fiery drama of splitted life. This is "A Path of Wine". It is destructive, terrible, anger and violence reigns there. For the one who is going by this path all reality is perceived as hell, as the ontological exile, as torture, as immersion into the heart of some inconceivable catastrophe originating from the heights of space. If in the first path everything seems as good, in the second — as evil. This path is monstrously difficult, but only this path is true. It is easy to stumble on it, and it is even easier to parish. It guarantees nothing. It tempts nobody. But only this path is the true one. Who follows it — will find glory and immortality. Who will withstand — will conquer, will receive the award, which is higher than life.
The one going by the "Left Hand Path" knows, that one day the imprisonment will be over. The prison of substance will collapse, having transformed into a celestial city. The chain of the initiated passionately prepares a desired moment, the moment of the End, triumph of total liberation.
You'll find more examples on the thread. Veritas's summation:
Can you not see? Richard preaches the end of the West. Richard praises Eurasianism. Richard praises Dugin. Richard speaks of mythical land of the Golden Age in the North. Shambala. Hyperborea. Thule. Why is this hard? Why is this not clear?
Eurasianism is rightwing nationalist movement based on myth of an Aryan Golden Age. Thule. Hyperborea. Shambala. Richard writes for New Dawn Magazine. Many articles for them. He links to them. He is not ASHAMED. It is not an ACCIDENT.
Richard writes of the decline of the West because he desires it. It is time for the Eurasian ascension.
Apocalypse is his Messiah.
Heinberg has influence, but he's just a prophet of his Messiah; he can't hasten the advent of Apocalypse. But co-religionists such as Maurice Strong are in position to do more than rend their garments about the end of the world as we know it. What if, he mused aloud back in 1990, "in order to save the planet," a small group of world leaders decided that "the only hope for the planet [is] that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn't it our responsibility to bring that about?"

"You can find Nazis in the most unexpected places, and without looking too hard for them."
In this context what are the 'hallmarks' that readily identify someone as a nazi?
I used to be one of those, "there are too many people on the planet" / "I'd rather see humanity extinct rather than see any other species die off because of us", type of liberal. I was raised by my like-minded mother who thankfully dosed me with a healthy skepticism of "authority". However, she still holds on tight to her habitual donations to the Sierra Clubs and other groups that I am convinced have already been coopted by multinationalist elites for the promotion of just the sort of Eco-Fascism you outline here.
Around the time I learned of Vallee's interviews in Green Egg magazine, I was also becoming aware of the Lebensraum movement. The volksy "fantasies" of a back to the land movement certainly DO have an incredible allure - even for me as I was beginning to rebel against the Eco-Fascism I was discovering in developing my own Gaian UFO hypothesis.
Vallee certainly touches on a lot of this in his seminal 1979 book Messengers of Deception.
Shaver's dero and tero mythos also recapitulates the modern schizoid experiencing of parts of these themes.
I did some googling on Heinberg after reading this. The most fascist-like thing I found about him was his embrace of primitivism and hostility towards civilization.
Very similar attitudes were a hallmark of European thought in the late 20's and early 30's. (Much less so in the US, though you can see indications of them in things like Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian stories.) Primitivism in itself is not fascism. But it does a lot to set up the conditions for fascism.
Much of the "culture war" has always been a struggle over modernism. Many conservatives basically hate the modern world, hate technology and its empowerment of the non-elite, hate the vibrancy and creative vulgarity of popular culture. Some of them dream of a return to the way things were a couple of centuries ago -- and some of them would rather see the whole thing go smash.
Fascism in the 30's catered to both those dreams, and neo-fascism still feeds on them today.
Ivan Illich made some pretty profound observations on the topic that environmentalism will be the next fascism in his interviews with David Cayley. He painted a picture of an upcoming holocaust justified on environmental beliefs.
Can't find it on the web, but will type it in to this comments board later.
As much as I love your blog and discussion board, I am always taken aback by how little everybody here actually understands about what you term the "occult". I prefer to call it esoteric metaphysics myself.
This myth that is being described by whomever this Heinberg guy is (I have never hear of him before), is nothing but a distorted memory of the fall of Atlantis. There are tons of myths of the kind in many different cultures and writings throughout time. The left hand path, right hand path analogy is just a way of describing the two different approaches to energy manipulation, one of which is orientated to service to others, the other to self-service. Shambhala is not a place but a state of mind (just like the Sirius Lodge that Alice Bailey refers to is not an organization but a level of consciousness.
The fact that the symbols of a certain kind of esoteric philosophy were adopetd by the Nazi's, does not make those symbols Nazi symbols. The symbols preceded the Nazis and had their own energy. Now of course that energy has ben distorted by the overlayes of the collective consciousness, that associates them with the Nazi trauma, but that is another story.
Just because the nazi's adopetd cetrain esoteric myths to promote their warped ideology, it does not make those myths Nazi myths. I have no opinion about H. and if he is a facsist or not. As I said before, I have no idea who he is. But I do have expertise in occult studies and I do know that the research here is sloppy- lots of guilt by association, what technically would be called correlational research. let me explain.
Correlation: There is a carrelation relationship when it is observed that when A is present B is present. But no relationship of cause and effect has been proved. That is although it is observed that A and B are both present at the same time, it is not know if A causes B, B causes A or C is causing both of them, or that they appear to both be present due to tatlly unrelated causes. It is an observation of a possible relationship but it is not a proof of a relationship.
Veritas, that I belive is actually Dreams End in disguise, makes most of his points in this way, bringing "proofs" to the discussion table that are correlated but not necessarily related. It is bad research. If you know anything about the occult topics beying discussed it is plain as day how sloppy these arguments are. But since most people here have very superficial occult knowledge, it is easy to think that these statements are accurate.
I love the political stuff on this site, but the sloppiness with which the occult / metaphysical topics are beings tackled reminds me more of the stuff of novels than a true serious discussion of esoteric themes. Exciting, interesting, but inaccurate. If you are here to be entartained, a la Da Vinci code, great! But if you really are interested in the occult, I suggest some further reading of esoteric writing and maybe the assistance of a good teacher, as some of this stuff is a bit obscure and just like the reading of ancient literature, can benefit from the guidance of someone with experience in the field.
esoteric metaphysics or no, i think 'a la da vinci code' is not only low, but wholly unwarranted.
so there!

It's OK, I will siimply put a spell on this irreverant anon 12:39 and put the fear of (*) in him......ah,just kidding 12:38 ....:)
Seriously, I must admit, I thought I had somewhat of a handle on much of the esoteric ideas there are out there, and I am a bit lost too.
But that's OK, we learn more when we are forced to do the folow-up research, come to our own conclusions and are allowed to expound on them with others.
Appreciate the discussions here whether they agree or disagree, they are usually fascinating and most educational.Obviously this is an area that is of high interest to Jeff and others with more of the needed disciplines than I have....

Nothing but? And for those of us who don't believe in Plato's Atlantis? Are we doomed to be left out of the charmed circle?
However, the word "distorted" does give rise to some interesting trains of thought having to do with ancient cosmology. This is one of those topics about which I know far too much, but I'll try to keep it simple . . .
Basically, all ancient (which is to say, Neolithic/Bronze Age) cosmologies have the idea of the world-axis as a central symbol. However, there are two very different expressions of that idea. In tropical countries, where the sun passes precisely overhead on certain days of the year, the world-axis is conceived as reaching to the sun at zenith. But in the northern temperate zone, where the sun never reaches the zenith, the world-axis is conceived as reaching to the North Pole Star.
There are excellent reasons for believing that the tropical system arose first, mainly because the regular patterns of celestial movement are far more easily observed on or near the equator. It most likely began with the navigators of the great southeast Asian subcontinent during the last few millenia of the Ice Age. That subcontinent was inundated in stages by the great melting at the end of the Ice Age, leaving only the scattered islands of what is now Indonesia.
The northern system -- which probably came out of a combination of local Paleolithic star-lore with the more intellectually sophisticated cosmology of the south -- has many beauties of its own. For example, the image of the heavens as a great, turning wheel with a still center could only have arisen in a pole star-based model of the world-axis. But to the extent that it involved an adaptation of mythic materials that had originally been designed for a different vantage-point on the cosmos, certain distortions are likely to have crept in.
One of those may have been the misinterpretation of traditions of a drowned equatorial paradise (the Equator runs directly through Borneo and Sumatra) as referring to a lost polar homeland.
This is not a minor point. Just as Europeans during the last half millenium of unrestrained looting have contrived to rip off the resources and art treasures of more ancient lands, so they have also attempted to rip off their myths, transplanting them to their own territories and claiming for themselves.
In that context, both the power and the essential *wrongness* of the Thule complex can be seen as stemming from the fact that it rests on genuine myths, hideously warped in the service of a concept of Nordic supremacy.
I was pretty freaked by this post. The whole apocalyptic nazi thing sent shudders up my spine, and I've decided to share why that is:
Around 6 months ago I ate a large portion of fresh fungi (the special variety). I spent the night on my bed, in total darkness and silence--an open invitation for 'spiritual experiences'. But what followed were the most terrifying, hellish visions I have ever witnessed (and I've seen a few, with and without chemical catalysts).
I was immersed in apocalyptic scenes of rampant destruction and death: there were teeming hordes of armed barbarians (many of whom I perceived to be soldiers), annihilating region after region--killing, maiming, burning, raping, and laughing at it all--a daemonic nightmare of pure chaos! And the scariest thing is that, wherever these bands went, they were joined by countless new 'recruits'! There was a sense that this was something these men [i]had to do[/i], as if they were destined to participate. Like it was their job.
These monsters were so completely entranced by their violence, I could only describe them as being possessed. By what or whom I cannot say, but what I do know is that very same zeitgeist that had captured the Germans in WWII, had now returned--with a horrifying vengeance.
I will spare you all the nasty details (I was privy to numerous scenes of torture and perversion, the likes of which I'd never fathomed). But the part that had the most effect on me, was a sensation of doom that arose as the vision dissipated; one that convinced me so fully of the reality of this vision that I became filled with sheer terror. I left my room crying, repeating to myself that "these things will really happen", and spent the rest of the trip trying to distract myself so I wouldn't have anymore visions.
In retrospect, I feel that I was shown something which [i]could[/i] be. Visions aren't sent by God; they are created in our consciousness. But then again, consciousness goes much deeper than we know...
anonymous @ 12.26, like most "esotericists" you have your head tucked firmly up your keister. yes, of course it's "just" symbology, but that's not exactly the point. please check out these books: arktos by joscelyn godwin, and black sun by nicholas goodrick-clarke, in order to get up to speed on this topic.
There is what wacko Russians and Germans THINK Shambhala is, and what Tibetans believe it is. For Tibetans, it has no connection to "only one way" anything, but is indeed a semi-mythological and/or imaginary ideal realm where the rulers and most of the subjects are more concerned with enlightenment than much else. Denizens can be Christian, Jewish, non-religious, Buddhist and almost everything but Muslim, although that is possible but not likely according to the myths. The Shambhala myth-land is prominent in the Kalachakra cycle of Tantras and related teachings and has a wider meaning than simply Shangi-La or Vril or any of that dreck. ---Clarke Fountain, M.A. Buddhist Studies, Naropa University
now if only i can articulate what i mean to say...here goes:
peak oil is indeed a big piece of the picture of deception dumped over our minds. as a good friend of mine says 'everyday is a war over mind-control' peak oil is one piece of the puzzle in a 1000 piece jig sawed image. anyway...
peak oil is a big lie. jeff is right that one day there will be a point of no return, or more precisely a point of diminishing return where alternate fuels will need to be widely used - that is if the elites lose..
peak oil is actually about artificial scarcity. its pretty simple really. as of today america has a small amount of oil refineries. and we havnt built a new one since the 70's!!!
thats one piece, by having limited refining capacity it ups the price and the perception of fuel limitations.
then the american automobile industry produces tons of SUVS, gas guzzling and otherwise crappily inefficient vehicles using even more of this limited fuel supply.
i now cut and paste from prisonplanet.com:
"Publicly available CFR and Club of Rome strategy manuals from 30 years ago say that a global government needs to control the world population through neo-feudalism by creating artificial scarcity. Now that the social architects have de-industrialized the United States, they are going to blame our economic disintegration on lack of energy supplies.
"they are going to continue to consolidate and blame it on the West's "evil" overconsumption of fossil fuels, while at the same time blocking the development and integration of renewable clean technologies.
"In other words, Peak oil is a scam to create artificial scarcity and drive prices up. Meanwhile, alternative fuel technologies which have been around for decades are intentionally suppressed.
"An internal Chevron memo states; "A senior energy analyst at the recent API convention warned that if the US petroleum industry doesn't reduce its refining capacity it will never see any substantial increase in refinery margins."
http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/energy/fs/5103.pdf
"The Memos make clear that blockages in refining capacity and opening new refineries did not come from environmental organizations, as the oil industry claimed, but via a deliberate policy of limitation and price gouging at the behest of the oil industry itself."
you then add a war in the mideast in one of the most oil rich nations in the world, then suppressing oil production by fueling an insurgency which occasionally blows up oil pipelines. and a shaky u.s. economy you will then see oil barrel prices up into the $60 marks. maybe even $100 soon enough.
EXXON JUST MADE THE BIGGEST PROFIT IN ONE QUARTER A CORPORATION HAS EVER REPORTED TO HAVE MADE IN HISTORY: $1O BILLION.
peak oil is one piece and it fits right into an idealist's eco-fascist dream.
the whole meme/pardigm created is this: we use too much oil, we pollute the world, heating it up, we have no more oil, when the world heats up theres more violent weather, floods, hurricanes, more earthquakes..(you see flashing images of the word DOOM and death and destruction)..one day oil will be gone, world economy crashes...blah blah blah blah blah blah.........apocalypse god, aliens and satan appear on earth and were all fucked.. this is an elitist scam, all of it, even religion.
u get my drift

fujacko --
THANK YOU for sharing your (admittedly highly subjective and psychedelic!) vision. I myself don't take substances (just too sensitive as it is), however, I have found the phenomenological descriptions of certain folks who have (like yourself) to be consistent with my own (hopelessly subjective) intuitions regarding the future.
Though we can only hope that the future may not play out in the manner of such a vision as the one you have described, there is for me a value in the vision itself as psychic information. For now, I will gather your painful description of a possible future scenario for ongoing future reference.
FYI, I highly recommend Christopher Bache's book *Dark Night Early Dawn* for a collection of psychedelically-induced visions not unlike your own, and carefully interpreted in a spiritual context in regards to the imminent future of humankind.
jeff ur last few pieces have totally touched the truth. the idea that the nation-state myth for america has changed from this idea of boundless potential pre-911, to this lie about how the fear of death somehow over-impedes the need to live life. this nation has been put on a death-watch. we accumulate all these ideas of such horror...
the key point from fujacko:
'the sensation of doom that arose as the vision dissipated; one that convinced me so fully of the reality of this vision that I became filled with sheer terror. I left my room crying, repeating to myself that "these things will really happen", and spent the rest of the trip trying to distract myself so I wouldn't have anymore visions.'
what matters is the after taste...we accumulate all these ideas of such horror...that when in the end i felt.....'a sensation of doom as the vision dissipated'
doom is the point. imagine the power you feel if you knew you made people feel this. for a second. this is the trip the elites live on.
you may ask how or why the elites can do this consciosly?...its because they don't care. the really smart ones understand there is no unmovable base of reality. its about perceptions. the elites exploit the conflict of perspectives. the do it by presenting a false dichotomy of choices. like newsspeak: if freedom is slavery, tyranny is the way out.
in the end its about liberation right? in life i mean. so the elites give to the sheeple false outlets of liberation. they really lead to a cage. it gets them off. kinda like how some freaks like to pin kittens in cages and torture them. you pin down another human, millions of them, you make them despair, wallow in doom. its about conquest.
'everyday is a war over mind-control'
'the sensation of doom that convinced me so fully of the reality of this vision that I became filled with sheer terror( mentally imprisoned). I left my room crying, repeating to myself that "these things will really happen", and spent the rest of the trip trying to distract myself so I wouldn't have anymore visions.'
not necessarily physical prisons...but mental prisons, ala the matrix. 'a prison for your mind' 'but why?' 'energy'
fear is the emotion that creates mental prisons.
Jeff:
You are cool-enough said on that topic as you already know that.
But, I think-aside from starting the conversation on this topic which is always healthy-you may be missing the point on this one.
The day we start equating "tree-huggers" with Nazis is the day I'm gonna' start staying in bed-or am I already late on this one?
Let us not forget that the "Nazis" got us to the Moon and a bunch of other cool things like the VW line of vehicles (I'll skip the love-bug conversation-or better still punch-love-bug), big-pharmacy, business management and logistics, the list goes on.
I keep most of my opinions to myself so I'll leave it at that.
You have a big brain but I think you took the easy way out on this one-but, if I may be so-high-on-my-self, you get a pass.
Besides, does anyone know what the true definition of a nazi is? Or a fascist? On most days they are not the same-restated I would say they are not close enough in relations as say a christian and a catholic.
Could you repost this article with better logic rule sets-or at least a bit better then my own-if not (at least for future posts) then the crazy people out there will continue to assume we are still retarded and still need their protection.
Just a thought.
Thanks.
What's interesting about this talk of Shambala and the Nazis is all the recent films highlighting this parasitic cultural relationship. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow had a mad scientist named 'Totenkopf' (reminiscent of the 'death's head' motif of the Wermacht) forcibly taking over Shambala. Bullet Proof Monk had a band of Nazis machine gunning monks to get the secret of immortality.
If you really want to go off about stealing other people's cultures, then what do you call Christianity? You basically rip off the Torah, mix in a few pagan faux-cannibal rituals like the sacrament, then get away with not having to abide by any of G-d's commandments to the Hebrews on how to live while claiming that only your sect gets into heaven. It's the Reader's Digest version of Judaism-all the self-righteousness and none of the actual work.
I do know that the research here is sloppy- lots of guilt by association, what technically would be called correlational research.
The following is a bit off-topic, but might be relevant because I've read the same argument being made to discredit so called Conspiracism at "gatekeeper" sites.

This is the same type of supposed logic which concludes Prescott Bush wasn't really a Nazi, he just associated with Nazis, was employed by Nazis and was a front man for Nazis. And oh...he just happened to be a member of a German death cult secret society. But there really isn't any direct and definite evidence to suggest Prescott Bush was himself really a Nazi. There is no hard evidence there, no sir...so we, the elitist journalist intelligentsia
will conclude that it would not be professional to stigmatize the Bush family with the Nazi moniker. We do not stoop to such vulgarisms.
Mr. Bush should have been hung in the gallows at Nuremberg, but that doesn't make him a Nazi.
I've heard the same argument used in defense of Margaret Sanger. No, Ms. Sanger herself was not really a destructive eugenist, racist or advocate of Nordic supremacy, the arguement goes. She never made direct comments in any of her speeches or writings to this effect. There really is no hard evidence there. But wait...a gentleman by the name of Lothrop Stoddard was invited by Sanger to join the board of directors of her American Birth Control League. Stoddard was the author of the book The Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy.
I'm no pro-lifer, but you can go to the Planned Parenthood site and read all the disinfo about Sanger there.
Just my $.02
"You can find Nazis in the most unexpected places, and without looking too hard for them."
How deliciously you have painted this story!
A Nazi theme has been playing like background music for quite some time now in current events. It weaves in and out of the story but is always there, just slightly hidden. It was most intense for me with Terri Schiavo and shouted to me each time I read her parent's name of Schindler and all the metaphors that made me think of.
We also seem to be flowing through a period of karma or "time echo" from the 1917-1918 era.
You have a wonderful blog!
Blowing kisses from Chi-Town.
Welcome to Peak Guilt by Association.
So you don't believe that the environment is nearing catastophic colapse? Not paying attention, too busy worying about some obscure dudes posisble nazi tendencies. Like I keep saying -- it's not right vs left, it's the elitists vs the rest of us.
Anything that tends to concentrate power in the hands of a few, allows the elite to convince themselves they have the right to make decisions on behalf of the masses, or leads to a bottom line where large numbers of us die off so that they can continue to live in comfort is wrong-o, no matter what name it goes by. I don't care if it clothes itself in the garb of environmentalism or not.
There is a real environmentalism -- sometimes it goes under the name of environmental justice. It points out that whatever the elites to do nature they also do to the poor, and using much the same symbology.
(See, for example, King Kong as an example of black=nature=dangerous => something to be killed off using the latest technology, wrapped in a large amount of poetic regret and avoidance of personal responsibility for the outcome. One wonders if Peter Jackson's forthcoming opus will handle the materials any differently. And let's not even think about the early 80's mess of a remake.)
I had an Ayn Randist friend back in high school. I used to get into arguments with her over the basic points of objectivism, starting with "A is A." That's probably the most dangerous statement you could possibly adhere to. Saying, "environmentalism is environmentalism and I have to support it no matter what" will doom you. The truer approach is to say, "there's environmentalism and then there's environmentalism, and I want to be able to tell the difference."
It's time for a general strike.
Or for now at least, a boycott involving gas.
As for this Nazi vs. esoteric occult thing, I think if the esoteric and occulted is so great, then show everyone what it all is. If we aren't shown, then any correlation to the Nazis is justified. A guy who talks about myths most dramatically associated with the Nazis is presumed guilty until he acknowledges the Nazi correlations and disproves/disowns them. And is there any reason to believe that Prescott Bush was NOT a Nazi?

“Like I keep saying -- it's not right vs left, it's the elitists vs the rest of us.
Anything that tends to concentrate power in the hands of a few, allows the elite to convince themselves they have the right to make decisions on behalf of the masses, or leads to a bottom line where large numbers of us die off so that they can continue to live in comfort is wrong-o, no matter what name it goes by. I don't care if it clothes itself in the garb of environmentalism or not.”
Exactly! One can start their own intentional community or currency or spiritual practice or self-sustaining farm (complete with wind energy if desired). The reasons people don’t do these things are due to many factors that control their behavior. Some people don’t trust their own intellects enough to discern an appropriate spiritual path for themselves so they trust someone else to do it for them. Religions though don’t hold the interest of the individual as prime; nor do systems of currency and energy distribution. These systems are used primarily to benefit those controlling (and unfortunately best understand) them.
So why don’t more people pull out from the systems that take more from them than they give back? Social psychologists point out the tremendously strong appeal individuals have to identify with a group. This is not a bad thing (in many groups) but when combined with the fact that most any group will be made up of people who don’t feel comfortable with individual discernment and others who really like controlling people…the situation is ripe for exploitation.
What to do? Know thyself! As you do this, your discernment IQ will increase and it will be easier to tell friend from foe and groups worthy of involvement from those that merely exploit. Explore what makes you truly happy. What do you pay in time away from family and authentic experience to afford the latest sports car (tied as it is to many of the institutions that keep you in your Black Iron Prison)?
It does indeed require a rigorous intuition to wade through the contemporary semiotic soup of propaganda…so I try to allow my thoughts about specific groups and individuals to keep evolving. I can see how peak oil may not perhaps represent the ultimate crisis for the average car owner (who may choose better fuel efficiency, less driving or more biking) but because the US$ supremacy is about the only thing that allows the US to push its weight around and because this supremacy is largely reliant on control of the world’s 2 most valuable commodities 1 oil and 2 drugs…peak oil may represent a more abstract problem involving currencies and control of other economies.
Most alternative movements away from an exclusive petro-fueled economy also seem to lend themselves to smaller group (even local democratic) control. Those who pimp us out in the matrix hate to see technologies that encourage individuals and groups to become self-reliant and unplug themselves. So who knows what they are cooking up to maintain their control of our energy needs in a world that may no longer need super sophisticated deep-sea drilling operations so we can turn on a light or heat a home? Will a large scale crisis be engineered to encourage people to run into the mighty/protective arms of government? Have they discovered a new and near limitless energy source that they are unwilling (for reasons of control) to allow to be used in any egalitarian or democratic fashion? It wouldn’t surprise me nor would the tactics to maintain control as the transition from one pyramid shaped energy model to another is managed…
I found this blog surfing, and will bookmark it.
Much to think about.
From that "Stealth Fascist" Chomsky: "If we don't believe in freedom of expression for
people we despise, we don't believe in it at all."
-Noam Chomsky
Damn sure brings to mind Nazi/Fascist tendencies, to me....not.
I wonder what the context of the entire Chomsky link would disclose?
Who cares what Chomsky thinks, ultimately.
"Suppose it was discovered tomorrow that the greenhouse effects has been way understimated, and that the catastrophic effects are actually going to set in 10 years from now, and not 100 years from now or something."
OK, so suppose it yourself.
Just think about it, for real.
10 years...certain catastrophe.
"Well, given the state of the popular movements we have today, we'd probably have a fascist takeover..."
Well, you probably agree with me that we pretty much already have, a most insidious, totalitarian fascism. Is there another course besides fascism that might arise, the gate to which Chomsky is keeping us from? Maybe...utopian anarchy? Not so sure about that one. Given the state of PEOPLE we have today, I doubt the anarchy would be utopian. So what else is possible? Is fascism necessarily the worst case scenario? I think not. Is it the best? Hell no, it's still hovering down near the worst. But of the scenarios in the upper half of possibility, how many would be realistic in the face of a certain, imminent global catastrophe? None, probably. Help me think of one, or some if possible. If not possible, then what are some of the more realistic scenarios in the bottom half, but still better than a fascist takeover? Maybe a popular revolt, wherein the masses hijack the world's technological resources to contain/reverse the threat? I don't know, that seems like a good scenario, I really need help thinking of the dozens of pragmatic solution better than a fascist takeover. If I was forced to live with fascism - which, well, aren't we all right now? - I would hope to make sure we were ruled by "good" fascists, the least worst fascists - better known as "Democrats" today. Anyway, I know there are other ways of dealing with the catastrophe as a society...let's think of them. Because I DON'T agree with this:
"... - with everybody agreeing to it, because that would be the only method for survival that anyone could think of. I'd even agree to it, because there's just no other alternatives right now."
That would be the only method for survival...THAT ANYONE COULD THINK OF...and even though I'm one of the greatest thinkers alive, even though my opinions (and few others') are broadcast to smart, influential people everywhere in all media, I won't even attempt to help my species think of another method, leaving you all totally fucked while the fascists take care of me in a bunker because I'm so fucking smart. Hey, there's just no other alternative - I GOTZ TO AGREE WIT DAT, bitches.
He sounds like a SALESMAN for fascism. He is PRESCRIBING thoughtlessness, PRESCRIBING fascism. That's his right, though, as a shadowy left wing equivocating gatekeeper. It works for him, benefits him.
But it doesn't work for us.
We don't have to agree with it.
We CAN think of other methods.
And the way it sounds via Chomsky...
We HAVE to think of other methods.
Can't expect our "greatest minds" to think of them for us.
Because what if the catastrophe is artificial? What if they are going right down the line: terrorism, asteroid/global warming, aliens/Jesus... We're seeing their threatrical production "Terrorism!" right now, and maybe only the beginnings of the show "Meteorology!", then the future project tentatively titled "Spaceship Christ!" Our THOUGHT-FREE, "MANUFACTURED CONSENT", our carefully cultivated unwillingness to have thought of alternatives will allow the fascist takeover to be EASY. They might be too powerful for us now, they might be technologically capable of everything and morally incapable of nothing, but if we can somehow make their lives HARD for them, then that increases the chances of their being stopped, whether through their own defects or some tertiary wrench. So let's think of some alternatives, and if you get the chance ask Noam for some.
re Chomsky responding to near term environmental disaster with accedance to a particular flavor of facsism;
don't read too much into any one thing that any one person says.
Weave from patterned coincidences.
If we burn all the carbon out there -- the methane hydrates at the bottom of the ocean, the oil shale, the tar sands, the imaginary abiotic oil --
We're done. We're venus. The inclusive we.
I'd rather mess around with facsism if that is the alternative.
but no false choices.
right.
Maybe he just meant, that fascism is essentially inevitable when the present system collapses, and that he thinks he -and most people- would accept any port in a storm. Think about it: when this government can no longer hold it together, McDonalds will still be there. Business as usual. If the supermarket shelves are empty, and the streets are full of looters, where else will you go?
I learned from discovery channel that they were there for anthropological reasons; investigating genetic links between certain Tibetans and the 'aryan' race.
sorry if this ia downer, and slightly off topic;
I honestly feel sometimes that the same three or so people are writing most of the posts on this comment board.
Maybe i read to many conspiracy stories. Maybe all these well-spoken, highly-educated and thoughtful posters genuinely have both time and inclination to input such detailed postings. I, for one, seldom do.
Then again...maybe "they" don't, and it's all simply infotainment.
*end of digression*
Hey Jeff:
For me, this is one of the most important posts you have written, because you have exposed a facet of Nazism I was not fully aware of. AND, because I think it helps improve my perspective on WTFIGO now. A very big THANK-YOU Jeff, and praise for your courage in broaching this topic, despite the possibility of misunderstanding from the ecologically minded, with your usual excellent sensibility. I am ecologically minded, as I think we all need to be. We absolutely must curb environmental destruction. But we must work together in the right ways, with critical examination of our motives and methods. Thank-you for this warning of not just the dangers of extremism, but also of the sinister nature of the a source of radicalism. In the end, they are hypocritical in the extreme, because they outwardly talk of life, health and beauty, but inwardly they harbor ugliness, destruction and death.
I met this blog a month ago and come back regularly. Jeff's interesting perspective and unique analysis is unparalled in my experience. I've been floored in realizing that the material covered (aliens, mind control, occult, covert gov activity, etc) can actually be recast as something plausible in relation to the "real" world. If nothing else, it is stimulating reading.
Re this particular blog. I am interested in the behaviour of humans from the perspective of biology. Without diminishing what we are, our ability to perceive self and others, etc, I believe we are essentially just very complex biological machines.
In this context, our social behaviour, like our underlying biological, chemical and physical processes, is dynamic. This includes feedback, evolution, etc.
Fascism is nothing new. As a social phenomena it appears to have occured episodically throughout human history. Perhaps from the perspective of all of humanity or even all of life on Earth, it has some function or purpose. It appears, only to fade. It might even be a byproduct, a spinoff of other processes, etc.
What I am really trying to express is that fascism takes on less sinister overtones if it is viewed as simply a sub-dynamic within the greater dynamic of complex human life, Earthly life, or universal life.
Chomsky is perhaps, though I don't know this to be true, saying that fascism has the function of allowing human society to survive crisis. One thing I am certain of is that if it comes, it will pass; history has told us that much. If it comes, perhaps we might better tolerate a benevolent dictator a la Lee Kwan Yew.
If Maurice Strong manages to be among a small, self-selected group of survivors of an apocalypse, it really won't matter in the long run. The damage done to the human gene pool will have been so extensive that the population will never recover - at least not in any form we would recognize.
And I wouldn't expect large-headed, extremely smart humans from this gene pool, either - more likely blind, banjo-playing idiot savants would be the typical result.
Starroute,
You talked about such things in high school???
I was too busy figuring out when the next party was......anyway- not to get to 'fundamentalist' on you - if what you say is true, could it have some relevance to the Ezekiel Story of the Nephilim? If they were from another race(fallen angels, demons ETs,ancient race), could there be a connection with THOSE blood lines and alleged multiple 'Extra-Terrestrial'visitation throughout a person's life?
AJ
I think this thread is nothing more than intellectual masturbation. Heinberg is just trying to get society to
focus on an obvious, immediate problem which will affect everyone on the planet within a lifetime. Start dealing with reality folks. Put aside Nazis, Shambala and Atlantis until the garden is harvested and the bike repaired.
"You can find Nazis in the most unexpected places, and without looking too hard for them. In your own head and belly, for instance..." Makes me remember that the problem isn't that there are evil people versus good people -- it's that there is good and evil mixed in all of us. Just today with the news that Cheney is strong arming senators to support torture makes me worried, though, that the evil is on the ascendent. I'm really surprised to see it so overt. Didn't we used to think torture very wrong??? Hopefully, a lot of us still do and there will be backlash.
A great book on the occult associations within the Nazi party is "The Spear of Destiny". Thinking of that book makes me think the current crop of evil doers may just be the reincarnations of the ones we have seen before.
Look what was on NAtional Geographic TONIGHT...which I missed.
9.00pm National Geographic Special: Nazi Expedition
December 1938. A German research ship sailing under the Swastika flag glides through the Antarctic ocean in search of stone and ice samples. Geologists are looking for evidence to support the bold `global ice theory`, according to which a comet was supposed to have crashed to Earth in prehistoric times and scattered the `original Aryans` all over the world. In the Himalayas, the `Roof of the World`, a Tibet expedition in 1938 was intended to produce new findings relating to early Germanic history. The Nazis believed in a Nordic master race that was supposed to have survived the demise of the legendary Atlantis. In Tibet so the theory goes these people of Nordic origin are supposed to have constructed the underground realm of `Shambalah source of happiness`, traces of which the expedition hoped to find. The true facts behinds the Nazi expeditions have never been fully explained. Who financed them? Who planned them and why? This documentary describes the exploratory expeditions undertaken by the Nazis at home and abroad, and with previously unpublished library material and statements by contemporary witnesses, members of the expeditions and internationally renowned historians and scientists, for the first time throws light on the mystery of these often bizarre operations. Unpublished film shots, propaganda films, written documents and photographs from public and private archives provide incredible testimony to the expeditions that were carried out in the Third Reich.
Not scheduled for repeat this month. Anyone happen to see it?
Are you confusing an Arcadian vision
with Eco-Facism? My knowledge of
Heinberg is more that he is an advocate of Arcadia. I do get very troubled by the population politics and can't speak about the references you mention he cites. For Heinbergs influences I would probably look less to Nazi Germany and facism and more toward the author Joseph Tainter and his book "The Collapse of Complex Societies" that outlines
outlines how civilizations historically tend to collapse precisely at the moment levels of increasing complexity are not sustainable.
http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=583239 too.
Kaz Dziamka in his article Jefferson's Arcadian Dream describes: Arcadia advocates a harmonious compromise between men and Nature. He goes on to say
"as in the case of Utopia, Arcadia represents an age-old search for the ideal society, one of the oldest and most persistent of human desires. It is present in the biblical story of Eden, of course, and in the Greek myth of Elysium. The legend of Atlantis is permeated with Arcadian fantasy."
http://www.hum.uit.no/nordlit/5/dziamka.html
This ideals were present in Germanany but in Nazi facist ideology it got very twisted. In Peter Staudenmiers excellent article "Fascist Ecology: The "Green Wing" of the Nazi Party and its Historical Antecedents" he writes that Germany "has also been home to a peculiar synthesis of naturalism and nationalism"
http://www.spunk.org/library/places/germany/sp001630/peter.html
I don't believe Heinberg or many of the Green movement are are arguing
nationalism. Perhaps more a connected bioregionalism.
As with any movement their will be
folks ready to exploit towards a particular ideology and like any
movement the Green movement has its
dupes and certainly its "ism" creep.
Certainly everybody certainly needs to be very wary of this when looking at any movement New Age,Green, Fudamentalist etc.
I think we are all remiss if we can't look more deeply at the body of ideas before running off and accusing folks of facist or commie agendas. Isn't that afterall a kind of a blogger McCartyism.
This thread has gotten me thinking about Roy Chapman Andrews. As a dinosaur-crazy kid, I was fascinated by Andrews' account of discovering dinosaur eggs in the Gobi Desert. But in recent years, I was disillusioned to learn that the real impetus for his expecditions in the 1920's was a racist one -- the hope of proving that humans had originated in Inner Asia and not in Africa -- and that the dinosaur eggs were merely a by-product.
Here are a few quotes I just dug up on him and his boss at the American Museum of Natural History, Henry Fairfield Osborn. Their mixture of racism, eugenics, a search for Asian origins, and sponsorship by the uber-wealthy is indistinguishable from the Nazi interests of a decade later:
In 1908, Henry Fairfield Osborn became the President of the American Museum of Natural History. He is most responsible for the Museum’s over twenty-year span of global exploration and collecting activities. Andrews and Osborn were both big thinkers with bountiful ambition and egos. Their association was profitable for them both.
Andrews’ ambition continued to drive him back to the Orient. He was able to use Osborn’s theories to convince him to sponsor large expeditions in China and Mongolia. Osborn contended that central Asia had been the locus for the evolution and radiation of mammals including modern man. Others at the time felt that Africa was more likely but Osborn has been well documented as a racist and any thought of black Africa as the origin of modern man was anathema to him. Osborn was also a believer in eugenics - a popular movement in some circles in the early 20th century that advocated, among other things, sterilization of “lesser” individuals to help breed out inferior peoples for the betterment of the world.
With Osborn’s beliefs in mind, Andrews conceived of what became the famous Central Asiatic Expeditions to China and Mongolia. Osborn agreed to partial funding from the Museum and made Andrews responsible to raise the additional funds. This is where Andrews’ salesmanship and self confidence really paid off. Having inserted himself into New York society, he gained audiences with some of the most powerful people in America. Not only did he meet them, he got committed funding from the likes of J. P. Morgan, Sidney Colgate, Cleveland Dodge, J. D. Rockefeller, and many others. Once he had money from the most important people, the society hanger’s-on followed suit “not to be left out.”
Osborn lamented what he saw as a decline in the human race . . .
"The rise of primitive and of uncivilized man is subject to the same laws as those which prevail throughout the animal kingdom, until human civilization steps in and interferes with the natural orders of things. Thus when man begins to specialize and human races begin to intermingle, Nature loses control. It appears that the finest races of man, like the finest races of lower animals, arose when Nature had full control, and that civilized man is upsetting the divine order of human origin and progress. . . . In America the original pioneer stock is dying out; the foreign element is in the ascendency. . . . Purity of race is today found in but one nation — the Scandinavian; but Scandinavia has been seriously bled by emigration."
. . . and he proposed a solution.
"
Care for the race, even if the individual must suffer — this must be the keynote of our future. This was the guiding principle which underlay all the discussions of the Second International Congress of Eugenics in 1921."
Great post, Jeff. I'm just recently tuning in, but it's nice to find others who suffer from the "hair on the back of the neck standing up" as events unfold.
I'm an environmentalist, though it has occurred to me that the ultimate expression of that would be to simply commit suicide, since that would be the best for the planet. It has also occurred to me that environmentalism could be turned into another fascist tool, and one that would be very difficult to argue against, after all, doesn't everyone want to "save the world"?
Coincidentally, Prince Charles visited Northern California last weekend to meet with organic farmers and support their efforts toward environmental sustainability.
"In the speech, Charles told the gathering, "I have always believed that agriculture is not only the oldest, but also the most important of humanity's productive activities."
Also interestingly, Cain was an agriculturalist, and it was he who killed Abel.
Well. this explains something. If your theology says the world is evil, then it makes sense to destroy it. (That's an old Gnostic belief, no?)
But then I believe in the Bible, which says that God's right hand will triumph and he will "destroy those who destroy the earth." (Revelation chapter 11)
The mention of the Black Sun of course evokes a certain Soundgarden song from about 12 years ago. Since I'd never really paid much attention to the lyrics (which are pretty much incomprehensible to a casual listener) , I thought I'd look them up.
----
BLACK HOLE SUN
In my eyes
Indisposed
In disguise
As no one knows
Hides the face
Lies the snake
The sun
In my disgrace
Boiling heat
Summer stench
’neath the black
The sky looks dead
Call my name
Through the cream
And I’ll hear you
Scream again
Black hole sun
Won’t you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won’t you come
Won’t you come
Stuttering
Cold and damp
Steal the warm wind
Tired friend
Times are gone
For honest men
And sometimes
Far too long
For snakes
In my shoes
A walking sleep
And my youth
I pray to keep
Heaven send
Hell away
No one sings
Like you
Anymore
Hang my head
Drown my fear
Till you all just
Disappear
----
By the way, another Soundgarden song: "Blow Up the Outside World."
Also the myth of two cities sounds very much like the two mythical cities at war in the Bible: Babylon, the "Whore" that poisons and drugs the world (See Revelation 17), and Jerusalem, the City of Peace (Revelation 21. Each is or was an actual city, of course, but in both Old and New testaments they are also used as types of two spiritual realities, two paths, two Ways, two types of men.
someone mentioned kalachakra tantra. Which made me think of kaula tantra, which got me thinking about Left-Handed Tantra, which originates in the same part of the world as your Left-Handed Lodge and whatnot. It is different, and pretty scary. One site informs us, rather blandly, that "... there are some forms of Tantra that include magical incantations [and] some that include eating of feces or copulation with corpses ..."
Mmm! Sure sounds enlightening to me.
Kaula Tantra "is symbolized by an eclipse which represents the union of Sun and Moon." Ah, our old Black Sun, or is that the Black Hole Sun?
