Spirit of the Beehive

"Original title Al Azif - azif being the word used by the Arabs to designate that nocturnal sound (made by insects) suppos'd to be the howling of daemons." - HP Lovecraft, from his History of the Necronomicon.

One thing I find both fascinating and instructive is the collation of correspondences between what could be called boundary experiences. I hope to do some analysis of this in a forthcoming post - something of a follow-up to our earlier study of Fatima - but in the meantime, here's a brief data dump of one such correspondence.

Marian apparitions

"We would follow the children and kneel in the middle of the field. Lucia would raise her hands and say, 'You bade me come here, what do you wish of me?' And then could be heard a buzzing that seemed to be that of a bee. I took care to discern whether it was the Lady speaking." - Fatima witness Maria Carreira, quoted in Heavenly Lights.

"I heard a sound, a din, such as a great fly makes inside an empty water pot." - Manuel Marto, Fatima witness and father of Jacinta and Francisco.

"Mr Manuel Marto explained to us that, during the entire duration of the appearance, those present heard an indefinable sound, like that which is heard next to a hive, but altogether more harmonious, even though words were not heard." - Italian priest Humberto Pasquale, investigator of the Fatima event.

"On July 13, I was at Cova da Iria. She [Lucia] knelt.... While Lucia was listening to a response, it seemed there was a buzzing sound like that of a cicada." - Fatima witness Antonio Baptista.

UFOs

Traveling slowly, the object reversed its course and with an undulating motion headed for the small cleared area amongst the trees where the sandpit was situated. The intensity of the noise disturbed David so much that his friends said he placed his hands over his ears and called out for it to stop. However, David does not recall doing this. The UFO began to settle down for a landing and the noise became a buzz, the children claimed. - From Three small boys witness UFO landing - Port Coquitlam, BC

Roland McMahon, a 10-year old boy, saw a silver colored UFO 15 ft in diameter, with a windowed cupola on top, hovering 10 ft over the farm area. "On its bottom there was a green triangular area, with a dark red area inside that they boy said resembled a human shaped profile." It made a buzzing noise like an electric motor. When Mrs. McMahon, who also saw the object, drove into the driveway, it flew away, kicking up dust with a wind. It was in view for about 15 minutes. From Humanoid Sighting Report, August 18, 1975

At about 2230 Dec 30 1972, Ventura Maceiras, an illiterate night watchman, was listening to the radio outside the wooden shack that is his home, when suddenly the transistor radio began to fail. Impact adjustment did not work, so he switched off. He noticed a humming "like angry bees." Looking up, he saw a bright light hovering over a nearby grove of eucalyptus trees. He could see an enormous object in the midst of the light, whose color changed from orange to purple. At the center of the object, he could see a round cabin with windows, and through the windows, two figures. - From Occupant Database

Two fishermen, Charles Hickson, age 45, and Calvin Parker, age 19, were near the banks of the Pascagoula River the evening of October 11, 1973, when they saw an oblong-shaped UFO. It emitted a brilliant blue light and made a sound similar to that of bees. An aperture appeared in the object and three beings exited the craft by floating in the air through the opening. The men were taken into the interior of the UFO by two semi-transparent beings, approximately four and a half feet tall, who emitted a faint buzzing, like that of bees. - From Heavenly Lights

In 1954 Mr. P. Petit and his employee, Mr. Tillier, with shop owner Mr. Pecquet, saw an oval object on the ground in Corrompu, France. When it took off the lights of a tractor went out. It measured about 4.5 meters (15 feet) in length and emitted a bright light similar to a welder's torch. It came back, turned, and flew off toward the southwest. It reportedly made the same noise as a swarm of bees. - Source, Jacques Vallee, Passport to Magonia.

Valdair Alcântara Maciel, who works as a security guard at the Pesqueiro do Rubinho, a fishing place, claim that he saw yesterday (may 26 1999), at 03:30 AM, a UFO in a area of the Itapeti Mountain, in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo's municipal district. To him the evidences are the marks left on the ground. It is a circle with approximately 2,4 meters diameter, with the marks of 4 "feet" and a smaller circle in the midle.... He say that the object had a red color and made a "buzz" noise. - From UFO lands in Mogi das Cruzes, Sao Paolo

Report - Sept. 1950; Korea, Navy planes on mission approached by two large discs, radar jammed, radio transmitter blocked by buzzing noise each time new frequency tried. - From NICAP's EM case list

Fortean entities

One particularly memorable subject, who was up-front about what she had seen, was an older woman who said she had encountered Mothman in her backyard. Her property was close to the boundaries of the TNT area and, hearing a buzzing or humming sound coming from the back of her home, she went out to investigate.... Other witnesses...told of glowing red eyes and a buzzing or humming sound. - From Return to Point Pleasant

Angelica Barrigon Varela and co-worker Remedios Diez were on their way to work at a local factory along the wall that divided the railroad tracks and the street when they heard a loud buzzing sound coming from the area of the tracks. Looking in that direction they beheld a bizarre creature floating and balancing itself above the railroad tracks. It appeared to be wearing a monk-like smock or coat, dark green in color that emitted intermediate flashes of light under the light rain. The humanoid itself was dwarf-like with white pale features and stared at the witnesses fixedly. The face was oval shaped and the eyes were like two deep black holes. It appeared to lack any legs below the knees as the smock hung in mid-air. - From Humanoid Sighting Report, January 16, 1975

DMT trip

20—30 seconds : a buzzing starts in the ears, rising in tone and volume to an incredible intensity. Its like cellophane being ripped apart (or the fabric of the universe being torn asunder). Your body will vibrate in sympathy with this sound, and you will notice a sharp blood pressure rise. 30 seconds—1 minute : You break through into DMT hyperspace. - From Notes on the Visual Stages of a DMT Trip.

A powerful buzz on the same frequency as the light oscillation grew in my head. The more I inhaled the more profound and intense the buzzing became. Each gasp of vapor stoked up the effect until my head was swarming with noise and light. - From DMT: Not like any other experience.

Near Death Experience

"Finally I stopped moving through the tunnel and had a good chance to look at it. The tunnel looked like a large vent pipe used on clothes dryers. The light was not primarily inside the tunnel but from the outside shinning in. During the trip inside the tunnel I heard a loud buzzing sound which hurt my ears. I wondered what supported the tunnel. Now I began walking looking for the ending of this tunnel." - Account of a Near Death Experience.

Astral projection

"I was meditating (i’m so good at it now! I can actually keep a blank mind) and I heard the buzzing noise (bumble bee buzzing). And I was like 'oh my gosh i’m projecting right now??'... I will hear buzzing, my body felt as if it was rising, although I could feel my body on my bed." .... "The buzzing – I will feel electic vibes going across my body. It sounds like a bee, but it narrows to a mosquito buzzing sound. - Accounts of astral projection.

Doesn't that description also fit a flying entity that was filmed in Mexico, if I remember correctly? Including the flashes of light?

Hmmm Jeff....

Lord of the Flies - Beelzebub (more accurately Ba‘al Zebûb or Ba‘al Zəbûb) - comes readily to mind, now, doesn't it?

Various linguistic theories as to the name, or whether it has been garbled.

This bizzare buzzing seems as good as any to me now.

Cheers,

the Saut-i Sarmad ... develops through ten different aspects because of its manifestation through ten different tubes of the body; it sounds like thunder, the roaring of the sea, the jingling of bells, running the water, the buzzing of bees, the twittering of sparrows, the Vina, the whistle, or the sound of Shankha until it finally becomes Hu, the most sacred of all sounds.

**************

... this is what the Japanese scientist, Hiroshi Motoyama, experienced after several months of pranayama practice that served to "ignite" the kundalini, or "ascending" chi:

"During continued practice, I began to notice some new sensations. I had an itchy feeling at the coccyx, a tingling feeling on the forehead and at the top of the head, and a feverish sensation in the lower abdomen. I could hear a sound something like the buzzing of bees around the coccyx.

Robyn Hitchcock, from a 1989 interview.

What is your new song "Madonna of the Wasps" about?

Well, "Madonna" is about an artist with a long, straggly beard who's kept in a white room in a castle somewhere in France. It's one of those castles where ... there are 31 doors but there are 32 windows, and if you hang a handkerchief out of each window, there's still one room that doesn't have a handkerchief hanging out of it. In other words, there's a doorless room.

And trapped inside this this doorless room is a very emaciated artist, and every night ... he sits there painting. He's got a kind of hotel suite, so he's not lying there in his own shit or anything like that. But he doesn't get around much.

Anyway, he's trapped up there, and every night this woman comes to him. As her head and shoulders come through the window, he thinks, "Great," but her abdomen is that of a wasp, and it's a kind of two-foot-long beautiful black-and-yellow abdomen with rings around it. And she comes in and she sort of pins him to the bed, and she sticks her tongue in his mouth, and she arcs up her abdomen and he goes, "Unnh, Unnh, Unnh."

She just curls this thing around and stabs him in the navel, and he gets a lethal dose of wasp poisoning. And he just passes out, and the next morning he wakes up and he's OK again. Like Prometheus, he's had his kidneys taken out. Anyway, he doesn't know why he's in there. He doesn't know what his relationship with the Madonna is, particularly. I mean, she's very attractive in one way, you know, but repellant in another.

And then one day, he wakes up, and he's not in the room anymore. He's just walking along in the fields in France, all these sort of flat fields. And it's early morning in November and there's a frost, and he sees this sort of shape lying on the ground, like a crashed plane.

And it's the Madonna. She's dying like wasps do in the autumn, and she stretches her hand out to him and says, "Will you forgive me?" And then that's where it ends.

There's the option: Is she actually going to whip up and sting him again, finally, or is he going to forgive her, or what? So we leave it there... Well, it's very long, so that why I had to make the song completely different, but that's the concept behind it.

Have you ever read William Gibson's Neuromancer? It's a Sci-Fi classic. What makes me think of it now is that bees/wasps and their hives figure prominently in the symbolism. The book also touches on some other topics discussed on this blog (e.g. politicians who get off sexually on torture, corrupt wealthy family with hints of child sexual abuse).

Also, there is a new movie out called Bee Season, about a little girl, daughter to a rabbinical scholar, who is a natural kabalist mystic; here "bees" refer to spelling bees, and (as far as I know) there is no suggestion of RA, just the normal sort of dysfunction caused by being raised in an overly-intellectual Jewish household (something I can relate to).

You might also recall that the appearance of the reanimated ghouls in Plan 9 from Outer Space - Tor Johnson and Vampira - is accompanied by a buzzing sound. Ed Wood was clearly on to something.

OK - maybe that's a little frivolous, but it gives me the chance to say thanks to Jeff and a few of the regulars here. I visit every day and just wanted to show my face, as it were.

Interesting - I'd posted in the past about something buzzing in my face while I was sleeping; along with some other weirdness generally:

"Most recent (six months or a year ago?) I was in the sleep/wakeing stage and literally had something buzzing in my face. Never saw it but more heard and felt it. I stirred somewhat and it moved down towards my feet, and then away. I went back to sleep. I’ve heard similar noises in the house but on investigation never seen anything. Me perception is of a giant bee or a model helicopter?"

Fireball buzzing could explain some of this (though not the drug experiences)

The buzzing sound you heard associated with the meteor fireball has been reported in the scientific literature for the past 200 years, but was generally pooh-poohed by many scientists until fairly recently. (Dr. Frank Drake, e.g., in "UFOs, A Scientific Debate," dismissed the phenomenon as physically impossible, and instead tried to attribute it to psychological aberrations of the perceptual system. This was part of Drake's attack on UFO witnesses as unreliable, since meteor witnesses, in his estimation, were unreliable as well. Others, however, such as Dr. Lincoln LaPaz, the New Mexico astronomer and meteor specialist whose name is also associated with the Roswell case, green fireball phenomenon, and secret USAF UFO investigations in the Southwest, was well aware of the reported buzzing sounds and took them quite seriously.)

About 15% of witnesses interviewed about major fireball sightings have consistently reported hearing these meteor sounds. Most witnesses describe the sound as similar to bacon sizzling. There have also been sounds reported by some associated with auroras. . . .

In 1980, physicist Colin Keay came up with a plausible physical theory to explain the sounds (termed electrophonic sounds). Suddenly the "impossible" might be possible after all. Maybe those thousands of independent accounts of the anomalous meteor sounds weren't crazy after all. Since then, these sounds have been recorded in the field. That should end the debate as to their reality.

Keay's theory is that the meteors generate turbulent plasma wakes (the glowing trails), which in turn generate low-frequency electromagnetic waves in the kilohertz range. If there is some structure near the witness that can act as an antenna and resonate to these EM waves, it will act as a transducer and convert the low-frequency EM waves into a higher-frequency buzz. Even such mundane objects as pine needles, loose hair, or eyeglasses can serve as transducers and produce faint high-frequency sounds, as Keay as demonstrated in laboratory experiments. (Thus somebody wearing glasses might hear the sounds, whereas somebody right next to them might not.)

Excellent post, mr. Wells. This is the first list of its kind that I've seen on the web, and it's about time. There is an undeniable common thread between these 'boundary experiences', which tends to shut up those who acknowledge or believe in only one or a few of those particular experiences. I hope you treat us to an(other) insightful analysis, also revealing what it is that you find so "instructive" about these correlations.

A shot at what's going on with the buzzing (which has zilch to do with bees, so let's drop that topic):

The sound - which many actually experience as more of feeling than just auditory stimulus - could correspond with a shift in perception as ones awareness rises to a higher level of consciousness/reality. One of the above quotes mentioned light frequencies; perhaps it is light, or energy itself that we 'hear', as we enter our astral bodies (whatever the hell those are).

Pretty New-Age, huh? Then there's the aforementioned kundalini aspect, the 'serpent' of spiritual energy (chi) rising up through the chakras via the spine. What and how meaningul are the congruencies? Are these experiences identical? Should everyone smoke DMT and burst into cosmic consciousness?

I'll wait here.

Jeff,

There was a post a while ago concerning altered states and ET visitation that occurred during pre-sleep or full sleep.
I recall a comment from one that had them quite frequently, especially when sleeping on his back. Scared him half to death, and decided to sleep on his side from then on.

Coincidentally, whenever I have those types of *paralysis* type know-you-are-dreaming dreams, there attends a definite auditory vibration.

I don't know you, Jeff Wells, but I wish I'd met you years ago when I was getting the first intimations as to what I would write about. Wow. Mariology. Big topic...I knew there was another side to statues and images, in my case, in my novel anyway, a black icon appearing just before a world war. The book did appear and is still in some libraries. But what really fascinates me is the detailed knowledge you have of subject matter, subject matter which I would have loved to have explored when I first started to write; wrong synchronicity, I suppose. We write the book first and then we find out what the hell we were auguring for, years later.
Now that I've stumbled upon this blog, maybe I should do some revising, especially with the Lovecraftian input, though I have been reading the dude for some time, but never got the demon-buzz
or the Mariology. Just A-bombs popping out of skulls.
Enough, I suppose that I had divined there were two sides to an icon, the one that elicits awe and piety in the beholder and the other something else. Then that buzzing sound. I used my novella to try to attain entry into a Master's program at Stanford University, but Wallace
Stegner turned me down, saying it was too much like journalism. Finally got the thing publihed through my local library after it appeared in a provincial magazine.
Oh if I only had all this research and all the comments that are now going with it!
Some of us have a tough icon to bear.

Out of the very few episodes of sleep paralysis that I've had, the one that stands out occurred when I was 17, and was distinguished by a VIOLENT buzzing, like a cheap doorbell on the fritz. It was pretty horrible, and I haven't thought about it for years.

The following is extracted from McKenna's True Hallucinations , and was recorded by Dennis McKenna following the ingestion of stropharia mushrooms in the Amazon jungle; the second paragraph is from The Invisible Landscape;

"But it was definitely at some point in time near to that conversation that I first heard the sound, immeasurably distant and faint, in the region between the ears, not outside, but definitely, incredibly there, perfectly distinct on the absolute edge of audible perception. A sound almost like a signal or very, very faint transmissions of radio buzzing from somewhere, something like tingling chimes at first, but gradually becoming amplified into a snapping, popping, gurgling, crackling electrical sound. I tried to imitate these noises with my vocal chords, just experimenting with a kind of humming, buzzing vocal sound made deep in the throat. Suddenly, it was as if the sound and my voice locked onto each other and the sound was my voice - but coming out of me in such a way that no human voice could possibly distort itself the way mine was doing. the sound was suddenly intensified in energy and was like the sound of a giant insect".

The brothers theorized that the buzz could have been caused by the "metabolism of the tryptamines within the cerebral matrix and might be the electron spin resonance of the metabolizing tryptamine molecules within the nervous system, somehow amplified to audible levels."

The buzzing sound is heard by 50% of those who ingest caapi (ayahuasca), which contains harmine ( a harmine compound - 6 methoxytetrahydroharman - is actually manufactured in the human pineal gland, and said to be produced by advanced meditators); harmine was originally called "telepathine" due to its telepathic effects. Other sources have also mentioned buzzing sounds accompanying dimensional breakthrough. It is also associated with UFOs and crop circles."

Interesting. That reminds me of some experiences between wakefulness and sleep I had in my late teens (circa 1978-80) and not since. I didn't tell anyone about them because I didn't know how to describe them other than as feeling a buzzing, centered between my brows, associated with a temporary paralysis and something like a "shimmering." Scared me - gotta be a tumour, I figured - but still, it was a pleasant, relaxing sensation. No drugs or alcohol, but they occured during a period of religious conversion and acute attention to spiritual things.

I have posted here before about OBE's and have had my interest refreshed by this post.

As a casual OBE'r, I firmly believe that whilst sleep in an excellent way to access a state "see" other dimensions, there are other ways to see it directly. And being "near" an entity that has the power to cross access this reality is one of them.

Moreover, when we "see" (and excuse the quotes but you cant really see without eyes - its something else) entities our mind immediatley turns them into something we can accept, like elves, fairies, aliens - whatever.

On one OBE, I once had an experience with a very nasty creature, and animal that looked like it belonged to a satanic horror movie, but when challenged direcly it turned into nothing more than a giant ball of brown fizzing, vibrating energy. It attacked me, I woke up tired and weak. After this, it took several years before I could actively leave my body during sleep, and in fact I have never quite recovered my full set of skills.

The buzzing soung is the catch for me here - its always the precursor to a full OBE. Sometimes the buzzing starts and stops, and sometimes it is a slow pitch, sometimes a high pitch. With practice you can make it go very high pitched, so much so you can quite feel it. The higher pitched the vibration the easier it is to leave your body.

Occasionally I wake up in sleep paralysis with the vibrations feeling like vibrating metal occasional touching another piece of metal, it feels not disimilair to something metallic vibrating against my teeth. Not nice. I really dont like going to sleep sometimes.

I believe this is my various energy bodies clashing at different vibrational rates.

Maybe when people feel this vibration their energy bodies are being forced into displacement by proximity with something that crosses these dimensions (by design or evolution).

Im getting really bored with the mainstream media, and mainstream thinkspace for ignoring all this stuff and I think that you really are going somewhere that so few are going.

Keep up the inquiring open mind Jeff.

Too drunk right now to find the right quote, but I think the Egg Man said, first it's kind of a chortle, then a buzz. Once you hear it, there is no doubt.

Here's to the buzz.

"The beehive is found in Masonry as a reminder that in diligence and labor for a common good true happiness and prosperity are found. The bee is a symbol of wisdom, for as this tiny insect collects pollen from the flowers, so men may extract wisdom from the experiences of daily life. The bee is sacred to the goddess Venus and, according to mystics, it is one of several forms of life which came to the earth from the planet Venus millions of years ago. Wheat and bananas are said to be of similar origin. This is the reason why the origin of these three forms of life cannot be traced. The fact that bees are ruled by queens is one reason why this insect is considered a sacred feminine symbol.

In India the god Prana--the personification of the universal life force--is sometimes shown surrounded by a circle of bees. Because of its importance in pollenizing flowers, the bee is the accepted symbol of the generative power. At one time the bee was the emblem of the French kings. The rulers of France wore robes embroidered with bees, and the canopies of their thrones were decorated with gigantic figures of these insects.

The fly symbolizes the tormentor, because of the annoyance it causes to animals. The Chaldean god Baal was often called Baal-Zebul, or the god of the dwelling place. The word zebub, or zabab, means a fly, and Baal-Zebul became Baalzebub, or Beelzebub, a word which was loosely translated to mean Jupiter's fly. The fly was looked upon as a form of the divine power, because of its ability to destroy decaying substances and thus promote health. The fly may have obtained its name Zebub from its peculiar buzzing or humming. Inman believes that Baalzebub, which the Jews ridiculed as My Lord of Flies, really means My Lord Who Hums or Murmurs."

The above is from: Manly Palmer Hall's Secret Teachings of All Ages

And from the Merovingian - and the Typhonian Tradition we read:

"In his book Outer Gateways Kenneth Grant writes: "In The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail, the authors reproduce the family crest of Clan Plantard, the contemporary representative of which was, until recently, the Grand Master of the Prieure de Sion, an Order which, according to Lincoln, dominated the Order of the Knights Templar and various other highly influential institutions which, at certain periods of history, included the Vatican. The crest which supplies the key to the Current represented by the Merovingian bloodline and the Order of Sion, comprises the symbols of the Typhonian line of descent: the two bears, eleven bees, and the fleur de lys. The motto incorporated in the crest reads 'et in Arcadia ego.' Arcadia=127, which is the number of the Egyptian Goddess Heqt who was typified by the 'lower part of the back, or haunch.' The two bears denote the Mother (Typhon) and her son (Set). The image of the bee pictorializes the buzzing or humming vibration peculiar to the Outer Ones, or their vehicles. Eleven is the number of Those who are Without, or beyond, the Tree of Life, thus identifying the Outer Ones." The Outer Ones are also the Qliphoth or the Ancient Ones of Lovecraftian lore. That the Typhonian Tradition and the Merovingian Tradition share the same important symbols seems to be much more then a mere coincidence."

Great post Jeff, thanks!

Sounds like a description of Tuvan throat music -- which, of course, is shamanistic in nature. Just as art seems likely to have begun as an attempt to represent psychedelic visions, singing and music may have come out of imitations of psychedelic auditory experiences.

For that matter, much of 60's psychedelic rock had what I've always thought of as a "buzzy" or "vibrational" quality. (Think, for example, of the Byrds' "Wasn't Born to Follow" or the Stones' "She's Like a Rainbow.")

Heh..

Kundalini is mentioned twice in the comments before I made it to the 'comment' button.

It's worth mentioning for anyone not aware of it that among the heresy charges laid on the Templars were accusations of the Osculum Infame, or the Obscene Kiss. When one brushes aside the usual Catholic xenophobia of anything and everything non-christian, an alternative explanation proposed for this ass-kissing behavior is that it's intended to awaken the Kundalini.

Leeq, thanks for the Kenneth Grant quote. I found some relevant Grant material after posting as well. More here on the Merovingian/Typhonian mythos from Grant as well as Picknett and Prince, authors of The Stargate Conspiracy:

According to Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince, the authors of The Templar Revelation, “ …the Merovingian kings, from their founder Merovee to Clovis (who converted to Christianity in 496) were ‘pagan kings of the cult of Diana’.” Picknett and Prince got this information from the Dossiers Secrets of the Priory of Sion. The bees, which are a recurring symbol of the Merovingians are, in the Typhonian Tradition, represented frequently as the humming or buzzing sound that occurs before the appearance of the Great Old Ones or “beings” proper to this tradition. Grant writes “The bee, beetle, or crab, is therefore the link between the earliest manifestation of the Typhonion current and its final phases.” Also; “217 is the key number of [Crowley’s] The Book of the Law. 217 is also the number of DBVRH, meaning ‘a bee’ which is the specific symbol of Sekhet, whose name means ‘a bee.’ Sekhet is another aspect of the god Set. There are eleven bees because eleven is the number of Magick and of the sephirah on the Tree of Life, called Daath, which is the “Gateway” to the backside of the Tree and to the Gods. Kenneth Grant’s wife Steffi Grant illustrated the cover of her husband’s book Beyond the Mauve Zone with an image of two bees holding a crystal.

Thinking further about music, I have the feeling "She's Like a Rainbow" may be more tinkly (harpsichords?) than buzzy. I haven't exactly listened to a lot of 60's psychedelia lately . . .

On the other hand, there are a wide range of strongly vibrational sounds from various instruments which do seem to have a more-than-merely-musical effect on the psyche. Bagpipes, for example. Or the drone strings of sitars. Or glass harmonicas, which were rumored to drive their players mad. (Which is why you don't see them around much these days.)

Humming and buzzing noises are strange in a number of ways, and not altogether like other sounds. For example, then there are the hums which plague various towns and houses. There was a hum audible in the town where I live a couple of summers ago. It was sometimes insistent enough to keep me awake, and I briefly took to wandering around the streets late at night, hearing it as much as a mile away from my house -- louder in more open places and fainter where the street was narrow or tree-lined -- but never able to get a directional fix on it. My best guess was that it might have come from a large exhaust fan behind the hospital. After a couple of weeks, I got tired of trying to track it down and just slept as best I could. By the next summer, it was gone.

HAMLET :
To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.--Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive.

From the Bee Gees who also performed this little "ditty":

Human Sacrifice

I see she
Knowing what I came here for
Get a little of your womanifestation
If I can pinpoint this feeling
When you gonna let it grow
We can draw the line on where we
Let the fingers go

Now I know me
Never wanna lose control
Making me the subject
Of your warm initiation
If I can pinpoint this feeling
When you gonna let it show
You make me nervous but it's now or never

Oh Oh
You can be my message from above
And it's time to say you're sorry
We can sanctify our love
Oh no
And you and I we're written in the wind
You can't just go movin' out
You can't leave me when I'm movin' in
I want to be your human sacrifice
I want to be your lover
I want to be your human sacrifice
I want to be your lover

It's you or me
Gotta be a kill or cure
Maybe undergo a lover's operation
Nothing cuts like a knife can
You don't wanna hurt me more
Look at all that damage
We could do together

Oh no
You can wear me closer to the bone
It don't work to make me worry
But the demon seed is sown

Oh no
And you and I we're written in the sky
You can't make me hold on
Better you shoot my love between the eyes

Your eyes on me on this table where I lie
And what I see as fact is fiction
You won't let me die
And I'm bound to be abused
I won't let you cut me loose
This love is out to get you
When the blood begins to flow

On one OBE, I once had an experience with a very nasty creature, and animal that looked like it belonged to a satanic horror movie, but when challenged direcly it turned into nothing more than a giant ball of brown fizzing, vibrating energy. It attacked me, I woke up tired and weak. After this, it took several years before I could actively leave my body during sleep, and in fact I have never quite recovered my full set of skills.

You've just given me another excellent reason to avoid OBEing! I have always hated that unpleasant gushing/buzzing in my ears and the paralysis thing happening. When I read that this state was the precursor to OBE, I said - no way. I'm staying right here. I had already seen and heard enough unsettling sights and characters in the hypnagogic state and "false awakenings." No need to invite more trouble.

By the way, that was me at 12:26 too.

starroute already mentioned what I wanted to - the musical aspect of this. So-called "savage" peoples the world over produce buzzing sounds in preference to melody. They will, for example, interfere with the natural vibration of a string so that it buzzes. Clarity of voice, a pure note, is generally the last thing on their minds - they need that trance-like humming and droning. For them, music is not entertainment, but a tool to get somewhere else, or to call up spirits. starroute was on the (peyote) button when he mentioned psychedelic music as going for the buzz - this is what feedback guitar was all about.

Nice to see Blake's "Ghost of a flea" in yr montage, Jeff ... I'd have thought he was at least as rich a field as Crowley in terms of magical systems ...

Not just 'savage' peoples. I'm reminded of this:

Burlison could not have known it at the time, but his life was about to be forever altered. While playing a show one night, he accidentally bumped into his amplifier and knocked a tube loose, resulting in a fuzzy distorted sound that he found utterly intriguing. Their next recording session was in Nashville, and Paul pulled the tube loose in his amp once again and unleashed the snarling fuzz when they cut their version of Tiny Bradshaw's jump R&B hit "Train Kept-A-Rollin.'" In the annals of rock 'n' roll's heroes and villains, the legend of Paul Burlison was born that day, as he unknowingly took his place alongside pioneering guitar maniacs like Bo Diddley and Link Wray.

Is your goal to function as the Pied Piper of paranoia? Other bloggers are trying to ferret out exactly who forged the Niger uranium documents and lied the country into a disastrous (and evil) war, and you're conflating "buzzings" in the Cova di Iria in 1917 with, uh, UFOs? Dude, we've had 'Watcher's' website telling us that since at least 1996. (And just for the record--are you suggesting that UFOs/tricksters/demons showed up at Fatima, and told people to "pray and fast for peace?" Yuh.)
Anyhoo, it's your blog, and you're free to take it wherever you like, but at least try to put things in perspective. (I know, I know, that's exactly what you ARE trying to do--but remember, it's tough to gain perspective staring at a kaleidoscope).

“What is seen first of all in the astral world is something within. These remarkable Spirits of Motion, who are not in their right place, and are fallen Spirits, are the first spiritual Beings to become visible – even before the normal angels – among those who surge and weave in the spiritual atmosphere of the earth. These beings who are the first to become visible on the astral plane, are the Spirits who in a sense lead astray the clairvoyant vision, -- although they are in the deepest sense of the word necessary for the procreation of the races. These Spirits, each of whom has many under him, because each one produces many spiritually subordinate beings, are enveloped in the spiritual world in a number of spiritual beings who are always inferior to the hierarchies in question.
The higher Spirits also have their inferior beings; the Spirits of Will have the Undines, the Cherubim the Slyphs, the Seraphim the Salamanders.
The abnormal Spirits of Form who are really Spirits of Motion, and who appear on the astral plane as hideous, these too, have their subordinate Spirits. They are the Spirits who live or move in that which is connected with the production of the human races, which is therefore connected in man with, and so to say depends upon, that element which we have described as earth-bound, connected with propagation and such-like. These Beings, this whole domain in fact, is one of the most highly-coloured and most dangerous parts of the astral world, and it is, unfortunately – as has better be said in this connection – the one most easily discovered by those who attain to vision by the wrong methods. The host of those Spirits who are connected with the propagation of the race, who serve that purpose, are the most easily seen. Many a man who prematurely and in the wrong way entered the occult domain, has had to pay dearly for having met with the host of these spiritual beings…” R. Steiner 11, June 1910

Someone else mentioned the Merovingian stream ...

But perhaps the most important thing for you to read on this theme is Loren Coleman's chapters in his olded book Curious Encounters: Phantom Trains, Spooky Spots and Other Mysterious Wonders in which he devotes a chapter or two to the connections between the June-July phenomena axis, La Fayette, Summer Fires and Summer Bees. There is much more to this but my copy is not on me at the moment. Perhaps I can post more with quotes tonight.

On a mundane tangent but I think relevant, when I was a child I had very minor surgery but enough that I was put under. Something that has stuck with me since was that as they put the mask on my mouth and nose, and told me to count backwards 100 - 1, there was a VERY LOUD buzzing. I think I made it as far as 95 but that buzzing was phenomenal. May be nothing related to what you are discussinhg but there was the chemincal alteration and a corresponding alteration of perception. Maybe it was just a squeaking noise made when you slip through the looking glass.

In 1787, the jurist, musician and physicist Ernst Chladni published Entdeckungen über die Theorie des Klangesor Discoveries Concerning the Theory of Music. In this and other pioneering works, Chladni, who was born in 1756, the same year as Mozart, and died in 1829, the same year as Beethoven, laid the foundations for that discipline within physics that came to be called acoustics, the science of sound. Among Chladni´s successes was finding a way to make visible what sound waves generate. With the help of a violin bow which he drew perpendicularly across the edge of flat plates covered with sand, he produced those patterns and shapes which today go by the term Chladni figures. Chladni demonstrated once and for all that sound actually does affect physical matter and that it has the quality of creating geometric patterns...

Yes, the beehive is a Mormon symbol. I think the early blokes lifted it from Masonry along with the main core of their paradigm. You can think of Mormonism as Masonry dressing itself in a t-shirt that says "100% Christian". They are mainly fooling only themselves.
The beehive thing is obvious, as a symbol of buzy, buzy bees making money, oops I meant honey for the hive.
One Book of Mormon story refers to bees by the name of 'deseret'. (and Deseret was inititially the name of Brigham Young's intermountian kingdom)
But I think the idea of bees being somehow sacred goes back to ancient Egypt. I don't know why. But it is easy to make a guess, with the way the bees work in selfless voluntary harmony, producing honey and building the hive. The value as a model would not be lost on the ancient Egyptian and Bablyonian rulers (nor Mormon rulers as well) for their monument and empire building projects.

Jeff, thanks for the post. The cross-referencing of the various border phenomena reminds me of Patrick Harpur's excellent DAIMONIC REALITY, wherein he posits that many of the bizarre fringe phenomena (ufos, faeries, weird beasties) occur because of the interaction of the human imagination with the imagination of the Anima Mundi, the spirit of the world. Fascinating stuff, particularly for anybody who's a fan of the Jacque Vallee/John Keel school of ufology, or George Hansen's excellent TRICKSTER & THE PARANORMAL.

I had an odd, buzzing-related experience at Gettsyburg in the summer of 2003. I was walking the first days' field early in the morning, at roughly the time of day the fighting had occurred there. I wanted to see where elements of Heth's division had crossed Willoughby's Run on their way to assault the left of McPherson's ridge. The crossing is hidden in the woods, and isn't marked or anything - it's not the sort of thing the casual visitor would be interested in anyway.

At any rate, the stream bottom is old red sandstone, and can't have changed much in 140 years. I found what I was satisfied was the crossing point (and I wasn't the only one to be interested - there was a faint, but definite trail to that point). At any rate, I started back from the crossing toward the Federal positions, along pretty much the route the Confederate infantry would have been following. There were ripe blackberries, and I grabbed a handful to eat as I walked, wondering how many soldiers had done the same that morning in 1863.

Suddenly as I walked, I hit a place in the woods where there was just this sort of oppressive "pressure", accompanied by a faint buzzing sound. It's hard to describe. I could hear a faint, definite buzzing, but what really caught my attention was just the feeling of being under pressure - the morning was pressing in around me. It wasn't exactly a physical sensation, but it was very definite, and couldn't be ignored. It was just oppressive, and tense, right there in that one spot.

The sensation was unpleasant, but not frightening. It was occurring in a very tight little area, maybe five feet across. I could step in and out of it, and did so for a while. I went away to look at some monuments, and came back to it some ten minutes later, and it was still there. I regret now that I was alone that day, as I didn't have a companion on whom to test the spot. I lacked the chutzpah to grab a stranger and ask him to check it out.

There wasn't anything at all unusual about the location that I could tell. http://www.civilwaralbum.com/gettysburg/panoramas_mcpherson3.htm shows a view of it from a distance. I was back in the woods somewhere between the "McPherson's Woods" and "Herr Ridge" captions, close enough to the open pasture to be able to see the split rail fence.

I swung by there briefly on my way back to the motel that evening, and it wasn't there anymore.

The small drum had a very sharp sound, and could be heard even with the other instruments making a terrible din. All the monks were singing and chanting a prayer, slowly increasing the tempo of this unbelievable noise. During the first four minutes nothing happened, then as the speed of the drumming, and the noise, increased, the big stone block started to rock and sway, and suddenly it took off into the air with an increasing speed..."

An acoustic levitator includes a pair of opposed sound sources which have interfering sound waves. The phase of one sound source may be changed relative to the other in order to move the object along an axis between the sound sources.

A loud volume of sound is produced, which is directed at the block. This sound is at or near to the resonant frequency of the block, and is greatly affected by the surroundings.
After a period of minutes of this continuous sound, the molecules within the block become excited sufficiently at the resonant frequency, that the mass of the block is affected such that the normal effects of gravity are not observed with respect to the block...

On the night of Wednesday, December 16, 1868, at number 5 Buckingham Gate in London, Daniel Home was being entertained by his friend the Earl of Dunraven. Present also were Lord Lindsay and Captain C. Wynne among others. After dinner Home said "...I am now going to perform the most remarkable feat of my entire career. I beg you to remain calm and keep your places."

So saying he went to the window and opened it. Then he went into the adjoining room and locked the door. Soon there came a loud purring sound which told his friends he was passing into trance...

There was no ledge outside and nothing to offer a footing down to the pavement seventy to eighty feet below.

The flames of the gaslight swayed violently, and gradually there came to be heard a loud humming sound. Then, to the stupefication of all present, Daniel Home came floating through the window, head first, his body quite rigid but resting on nothing. Limply it slumped into an armchair and Home began coming out of his trance...

Don't know if this is related, but I've had two experiences of, let's call it, "beneficient buzzing." Three times I was, imo, warned away from contacting a "bad" person. The first time, I was sitting in my bedroom thinking, "why not just call him and say hi?" Immediately I heard a hissing sound several feet away from me. Outside my head. Startled, I took it as a warning and didn't call him. Some time later, I was in my car when I had a similar thought about the man. Immediately, a wasp flew in my open window. Again, I chose to take it as a warning. The only other time I seriously had the thought of contacting him I was in a restaurant. I had the thought, looked up, and saw on the wall in front of me a painting of a rat. A rat? In a restaurant? I have always wondered if it was still there after I left that day.

Concerning Anonymous's experience with being put under as a child, what you likely experienced was N20 (laughing gas) intoxication. The persistent, buzzing noise is an auditory hallucination I got nearly every time throughout my N20 experiences. It's interesting to see descriptions from other "boundary experiences" perfectly describe the sound. I know the buzzing noise on N20 is pretty common as well, most of my friends experience the same thing.

From Joaquim Fernandes, Ph.D, co-author of the book Heavenly Lights. The Apparitions of Fatima and the UFO Phenomenon" (EcceNova Editions, 2005)

The Fatima Entity speech process
Amazing coincidences (?)

The modulated frequencies ranged from 200 to 400 Hz obtained in the so-called Microwave Auditive Phenomenon are a good clue to search for a comparative hypothesis to the communication signal that could have been produced during the classic Fatima Apparitions 1917 episodes, in Portugal, as described by the late seer Sor Lucia and the Luminous Entity described as Virgin Mary by the official Catholic interpretation of the events.
What kind of frequencies can be produce by other artificial or living objects can be ranged between those intervals – 200 – 400 Hz?
A large amount of data has been mentioned in the scientific literature and experimental field recordings. For example, Hayward G. Spangler, from the Carl Hayden Bee Research Center, Tucson, US, a most experienced entomologist and professor at the University of Arizona, have been studied several types of honeybees ( Apis mellifera L. or mellifica in occidental European countries ) in Arizona, US and Costa Rica. He found an elevated mean of wingbeat frequencies of honeybees ( WBF ) of 285 Hz.
Among several correlations between air temperature thoracic bees and WBF he reported data showing the mean WBF was 196.8 Hz during free flying honey bees flying both to and from the hive. Two bees colonies produced 203 Hz ( Apis mellifera species). Other studies made by Deutch researcher Hansson, A. (1945), reported that stinging bees have a mean WBF of 285 Hz ( range 273-305 Hz).
This is a kind of sound heard by the seers and also by some witnesses around the oak tree, the spot where the Luminous Entity was seen. They said: “it looks like a humming or buzzing of bees only and always the Lady seems to “speak”, but without the Lady having moved her lips – according Lucia own “internal “ sensations suggesting the reception of some kind of information translated through the seer words. That humming or buzzing bees sound was heard outside the brains of the witnesses around the oak tree encounter spot. We can think that it would be an impressive and audible sound spreading for a few meters square.
So, it is not absurd conclude that the communication signal from the Luminous Lady to Lucia during the Fatima Apparitions episodes seems to be coherent with a range around 200 Hz, which is compatible with the experimental data obtained by the Microwave Auditive Phenomenon as we can find in the literature produced by Canadian, French and Americans researchers since decades. Or, as it has been established since decades that those laboratorial experiments confirmed the possibility of reception of signals inside of the human brain. The unknown “fourth Fatima seer” and Lucia “message little words” non sensorial reception make plausible a kind of personalized communication in the Fatima apparitional process.
The author thanks the research contribution of Dr. Maciel Correia, from University of Porto.

Hi
thanks for this info. The buzzing sensation just happened to me and I was looking online to find out what it was about.
I was in meditation, 'chatting' as I do to the Holy Spirit when my stomach started to buzz, then my hands then my entire body was buzzing. I dont know what happened but it took me some time to 'come back'. It was an internal buzz that I could hear as well as feel. Very strange.

maybe thats the kundalini chi? it started in my stomach...it took sometime for the buzzing to stop.

startling, really startling.
Perhaps if there were more info then we would have an idea and wouldnt be scared of the sensation?

thanks
Nat

This will sound strange, and it certainly doesn't fit all the data, but we *do* know empirically that white noise can be used to cause hypnagogic hallucinations. Perhaps in some cases, the buzzing caused the entities, not the other way around. In other cases, the buzzing may have aided glamour effects -- in a hypnagogic state, one can be more prone to projecting the content of a suggestion onto one's senses, and so a buzzing may aid some entity that doesn't look like anything in particular to be seen as the BVM, or a UFO, or a machine elf, or Tim Leary on a hoverboard with diamonds.

ALL THANKS TO DR WILLIAMS WITH HIS HERB I WAS CURED FROM A TERRIBLE TINNITUS.
. Is my pleasure to comment on this site and i thank the admin of this site for his/her great work so far. I really don’t know how to thank DR WILLIAMS for helping me get cured for over 20 year of suffering from a terrible tinnitus, my tinnitus started when i was 28 year i thought is going to end one day but even get worse as days went by,i have tried all western drugs prescribed by doctors but to no avail i lost total concentration, even at night i screams even more because the sounds become louder because everywhere is quiet. i came across DR WILLIAMS contact through a headline news on internet about how DR WILLIAMS have help so many people to get cured of tinnitus and so many other with similar body problem ,i contacted him and he told me how to get his herb, few day later he sent me the herbal portion which i take every morning for 21 days, and his medicine was able to restore me back to normal and now am very okay without any side effects whatsoever If you have Tinnitus, you can contact him on his email address drwilliams098765@gmail.com for help
