The Occult History of the National Security State
A little High Weirdness, on the heels of the Merlin Project.
Saturday, The Independent reported on the release of thousands of declassified documents, held by the UK's Ministry of Defense UFO department, SF4, "detailing credible observations of unidentified flying objects reported by RAF personnel, British Airways pilots and senior police officers."
The files contain incidents such as this:
In July 1977 Flt Lt A M Wood reported "bright objects hanging over the sea''. The MoD document adds that the RAF officer said the closest object was "luminous, round and four to five times larger than a Whirlwind helicopter". The UFOs were reported to be three miles out to sea at a height of about 5,000ft.
The officer, whose report is supported by Cpl Torrington and Sgt Graham, said: "The objects separated. Then one went west of the other, as it manoeuvred it changed shape to become body-shaped with projections like arms and legs." The men who were positioned at the picket post at the RAF station were able to observe the strange objects for an hour and 40 minutes.
At the same time a radar station detected the objects in exactly the same position as the men had observed them. It registered them to be between 30 to 35 degrees before they disappeared from the screen.
The report describes Flt Lt Wood as "reliable and sober". It adds: "Two contacts were noted on radar, both T84 and T85, at RAF Boulmer. They were also seen on the Staxton Wold radar picture which is relayed to West Drayton... On seeing the objects on radar the duty controller checked with the SRO at RAF West Drayton as to whether he could see the objects on radar supplied from RAF Staxton Wold."
I know this is an intellectually embarrassing topic. I know because I embarrass myself by raising it. Even on the rare occasions when unidentified aerial phenomena are accorded a serious treatment in the reputable press, it seems inappropriate to draw attention to the stories as somehow newsworthy, rather than regard them as sensationalist trifle. I think this is unfortunate, because the declassified records show that this subject is taken extremely seriously deep within the same Defense establishments which foster its ridicule. As seriously as they take it, so should we.
The Independent calls the above incident "among the most credible reports of a possible visit by extraterrestrial life-forms." As much as I respect The Independent, drawing such a conclusion seems to me sloppy work. Of course it's entirely predictable, as the UFO = alien spacecraft is a pretty hard meme to crack. But consider the story. The declassified report is a sober telling of something fantastic; something which shouldn't be, yet is. Why must it be ascribed to ETs, when the report doesn't even include the observation of a life-form?
Respected researcher Jacques Vallee says, "I will be disappointed if UFOs turn out to be nothing more than spaceships." Me, I think I would be relieved.
Why? Here's a for instance.
In 1918 in New York City, occultist and British spy Aleister Crowley conducted a ritual he called the "Amalantrah Working" intended to create a "magick portal" - a dimensional rift - through which certain intelligences would be invited to cross and manifest themselves in the world. Crowley claimed that one being he called "Lam" did cross, and he drew a portrait. The image bears striking resemblance to the "Greys" of later UFO mythology.
Crowley and "Lam":
In 1946 in New Mexico, Jack Parsons and L Ron Hubbard conducted a ritual they called the "Babalon [sic] Working," to reopen the portal. Parsons was a rocket scientist, co-founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and "true father of US space exploration," according to Werner von Braun. (He was to die in 1952 in a mysterious explosion.) Hubbard, the future founder of the Church of Scientology, was an officer of US Naval Intelligence. Both were adepts of the Ordo Templi Orientis, which was originally an "Illumined" high Masonic order, and led at the time by Crowley.
Jack Parsons and L Ron Hubbard:
Ardane Stewart picks up the story:
The gist of it was that Parsons desired to take the spirit of Babylon, the “Whore of Babylon,” and invest it in a human being. The idea was to create a child in the spiritual world, and then call down the spiritual baby and direct it into a human womb. When born, this child would incarnate the forces of Babylon, which they considered to be a good thing.
...the rites were duly performed as written from January 4th to 15th of that year. It is not known if a spiritual child was enwombed from them. What is known is that the Magickal Portal first created by Crowley - and which originally let Lam into the earth-world - was reestablished with considerable intensity by Parsons and Hubbard. From the diaries of the participants, it is also clear that they were not as adept as Crowley in the closings of portals. What they seemed to have accomplished was the drastic enlargement and ripping of an existing Magickal Portal and the subsequent non-closure of it. Perhaps the rip they created was not possible to close. In any event, the modern UFO era began exactly a year and a half later on June 24th, 1947, with Kenneth Arnold's sighting over the Cascade Mountains in Washington State.
Stewart quotes Kenneth Grant, current head of the OTO, as saying “Lam is a Great Old One whose archetype is recognizable in accounts of UFO occupants.” Grant has organized an OTO "Cult of Lam," and a number of members claim remarkable success in their invocation of the "trans-mundane" being, or perhaps type of being. One contactee, Michael Bertiaux, regards Lam as the “subterranean burgeoning of Lucifer-Gnosis,” which represents the "appropriate path of human spiritual growth at this time."
None of this would merit much attention from me, apart from these four facts:
1. The UFO phenomenon remains unexplained.
2. The modern phenomenon exploded at the time and place of the "Babalon Working."
3. The phenomenon is the subject of an abiding cover up.
4. US military-intelligence has demonstrated a deep and ongoing interest in the occult and cult organizations, including the OTO.
For instance, Alex Constantine writes that a "number of intelligence agents with occult interests already had their hooks into the OTO. One of them was Gerald Yorke, a veteran British intelligence agent working...'with American intelligence in an attempt to absorb the OTO into the idealogical warfare network of the political right.'" And it may be worth noting that Retired Colonel and Satanist, Michael Aquino (about whom we've written before), writes that his Temple of Set "recognizes and enjoys cordial relations with the US OTO."
In Messengers of Deception, Vallee writes:
The social process caused by the belief in the [UFO] phenomenon takes the form of new sects, movements, and "contact" cults. Close observation of these cults shows that they are monitored and in some cases deliberately manipulated by occult groups, government organizations, and extremist political movements.... The group of people who will first manage to harness the fear of cosmic forces and the emotions surrounding UFO contact to a political purpose will be able to exert incredible spiritual blackmail.
He adds
I believe there is a very real UFO problem. I have also come to believe that it is being manipulated for political ends. And the data suggest that the manipulators may be human beings with a plan for social control. Such plans have been made before, and have succeeded. History shows that having a cosmic mythology as part of such a plan is not always necessary. But it certainly helps.
Since it's at last becoming respectable to compare Bush's America to Hitler's Germany, perhaps we should also remember the occult history of the Nazis, and wonder whether that fascination is another legacy adopted by the National Security State. Because as much as George Bush quotes, or rather misquotes, the Bible, he governs more as a follower of Crowley than of Christ. From Crowley's Book of the Law: "We have nothing with the outcast and the unfit: let them die in their misery. For they feel not. Compassion is the vice of kings: stamp down the wretched & the weak: this is the law of the strong: this is our law and the joy of the world."
In Messengers of Deception, Vallee recounts two briefings in the mid-70s with American and French officials. While the White House Assistant Science Advisor was only concerned with public relations - how the "flying saucer" business was spun - the French cabinet minister demonstrated genuine concern about the nature of the phenomenon.
Vallee asked him whether he thought the "phenomenon, or at least its social effects, might be under the control of a human group - not necessarily a government?"
The cabinent minister replied:
That possibility does exist. But we know what human beings would do with such power. I have seen the effects of power, believe me, in my years in government. If that turns out to be the answer, I will jump into the Seine without waiting for developments.
But no worries. George Bush just really, really likes the Texas Longhorns.

Hi Jeff,
since some days you suggest a donation to this Blog. I'm ready to give some money, as I read a lot of very interesting topics and thoughts on this Blog which I would not have found or read otherwise. And I pay for my daily newspaper, which should report on some things you deal with here and does not even mention them.
But I think it would be fair to explain clearly where the money goes to. To cover the costs connected with the maintenance of this account, or to pay you for the time you spend on researching and writing your articles? I guess, looking at the amount of articles you write, it is much more than a hobby?

The "UFO" phenomena are most likely military projects with experimental airborne vehicles of various designs & purposes (weaponry, surveillance, weather-monitoring, aeronautic physics, etc.).
Of course, in some cases, the military experimentation could be for social/psychological purposes in order to manipulate & monitor the reactions of witnesses or unwitting participants in these experiments (and subsequently manipulate & monitor information dissemination within targeted groups and also to the general public regarding these incidents).

Hi Gandalf, thanks for the question. I added the button because in mid-December, the magazine which had employed me for 11 years unexpectedly went out of business. And after more than a month out of work, I felt the need to put out the hat to justify to myself and my family the effort I put in here while I look for something else.
I supposed I should have explained my situation earlier, but I'm finding disemployment, among other things, to be rather embarrassing.
I've been puzzling for a while about the involvement of John Fisher, head of the American Security Council, with the UFO group NICAP back in the 70's.
The American Security Council is a little-known but extremely influential right-wing organization. It was founded in the 1950's by Sears president Robert E. Wood with the goal of maintaining files on left-wingers for the benefit of corporations that might otherwise unknowingly employ them. In the 70's, looking for a new mission, it reframed itself as a major leader in the opposition to detente and arms control. It is sometimes described as the soul of the military-industrial complex.
John Fisher has been its head for the last fifty years, and his UFO activities are apparently considered embarrassing enough that they don't generally get mentioned much except by UFO cultists themselves. See:
http://www.nicap.org/papers/hall-IUR1994.htm
http://www.subversiveelement.com/firefromsky24.html
The UFO types follow their own particular brand of conspiracy theory, which makes it difficult to sort out fact from fiction in their accounts. But it does seem that NICAP was suspected of being a CIA front and also had certain unsavory links with neo-Nazi groups.
These kinds of connections also raise the question of why Neocon Daniel Pipes, of all people, should recently have found it necessary to raise an alarm about mergers between UFO cultists and neo-Nazis. See:
http://www.danielpipes.org/article/1439
This is not a topic I've ever explored in detail, but -- along with related questions like the origin of CIA mind-control experiments or who really murdered Ioan Couliano -- it does seem to call out for investigation by someone with a level head and a firm grip on reality.
Jeff,
Interesting post. Sorry to split hairs, but while Hubbard said he was an intelligence agent during the war, according to my sources, he was stationed on a boat off of the coast of Australia, far away from any combat. This was where he supposedly became an invalid, and then miraculously healed himself through Dianetic techniques. BTW, one of the better books on Hubbard is Piece of Blue Sky by Atack.
Best of luck on your job search,
Thanks Anonymous. For Hubbard's military record I'm relying chiefly on Fletcher Prouty's critique of Russell Miller's Bare-Faced Messiah.
Prouty writes:
Almost all of Hubbard's millitary record is replete with markings that signify deep intelligence service at the highest levels. Many of his records, copies of official records, revealed that even the originals had been fabricated in the manner peculiar to the intelligence community in a process that we call "Sheep Dip". I myself have supervised a lot of that function in the offices I managed during 1955-1964.
"Sheep Dip" is a process that provides, customarily, three files. One is the true civilian record of the agent. One is his agency or military true record. The third is his "cover" personality and all that it takes to support it.
Thus when one researches these files, in a routine manner, he may get copies from any one of three...or of various kindred files that are maintained for special reasons. Some of Hubbard's records are kept in from 8 to 18 files as is clearly noted in codes on the records.
...
Since Hubbard's service at that time was with an intelligence activity, available records do not provide details of the action or of injuries sustained in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre. (I myself have an award, the Legion of Merit, that was given to me by the U.S.Air Force in lieu of an award made to me by Allen Dulles when he was the Director of Central Intelligence. Those data surrounding that award have never been released...not even to myself for my own keeping.]
Something most important that Miller chose to overlook was the fact that Hubbard has been awarded (see document cited above) a "Unit Citation". This award is most important and special. Unit Citations are made only by the President of the United States to those combat units performing particularly meritorious services, for example: to the Nineteenth Bomb Group in Indonesia in early 1942. Hubbard's citation came from such service at that same time when he was serving with "Asiatic Fleet Intelligence" as cited above.
...
Miller failed to note that Hubbard's first Active Duty Orders were signed by none other than Chester Nimitz, later the famous five-star Admiral and hero of Pacific campaigns. A small code number on those same orders identifies Hubbard as being placed on duty with Naval Intelligence (ONI). From that intelligence duty in New York City Hubbard was ordered to another intelligence school in San Francisco and thence en route to Cavite Navy Base in the Philippines. Cavite was the site of the Navy's primary intelligence operation related to the MAGIC program that broke the Japanese Code.

Maybe you got this already. Crowley figures at the edge of some Negroponte-ish intrigue involving Roger Casement, and of course mind-altering drugs, and hypnotic manipulation, and of course, people dying.
And of course other spooky mystery stuff.
What a tremendous relief it would be to be a fundamentalist looking at these things, with a world made simple as pie underneath you, and no need to figure anything out at all. Just do what you're told to do by the man behind the curtain.

It requires a very limited sense of place to describe another being as "not from here".

FWIW, I think Steven Spielberg's remake of War of the Worlds is coming out this summer.
Thanks for the link, bin'dare. I'm reading two books concurrently right now: "Storm Troopers of Satan: An Occult History of the Second World War," and "Sex and Rockets: The Occult World of Jack Parsons." They make interesting companion volumes.
The Nazi-Tibet connection is fascinating. The Vril Society believed that after the fall of Thule its survivors settled in Tibet, living in caves under the mountains performing magic. The Nazis sponsored expeditions to Tibet every year from 1926 to 1942. In 1926 German explorer George Roerich was also in Tibet, and recorded an amazing sight in his journal:
"Something remarkable! In the morning some of our caraveneers noticed a remarkably big black eagle [symbol of Imperial Germany] flying over us. Seven of us began to watch this unusual bird. At this moment another of our caravaneers shouted, 'There is something far above the bird.' We all saw something big and shiny reflecting the sun, like a huge oval moving at great speed. Crossing our camp the thing changed direction from south to south-west. And we saw how it disappeared in the intense blue sky. We even had time to take our field glasses and saw quite distinctly an oval form with shiny surface, one side of which was brilliant from the sun."
Here's a passage from "Storm Troopers of Satan" which references the Society of the Green Dragon and the OTO:
"In 1929, three years after the Nazis had first made contact with the monks of Agarthi and Shamballah, a Tibetan colony was established in Germany, with branches in Berlin, Nuremburg and Munich. Apparently, however, only the monks of Agarthi were willing to help the Nazis.... The monks from Agarthi were known in Germany as 'The Society of Green Men,' because of their strong links - for hundreds of years - with the Green Dragon Society of Japan, to which Haushofer himself belonged. Indeed, seven members of the society joined up with the German-based group.
"In Berlin, Hitler met regularly with the leader of the Tibetan community, a monk notable for his feats of clairvoyance and precognition. He was nicknamed 'the man with the green gloves,' and on three separate occasions correctly predicted, in the press, the precise number of Nazi deputies elected to the German Parliament. He also foretold the exact date when Hitler would become leader of Germany, and even the date when the Second World War would begin. This level of successful prediction soon attracted wide interest among the Nazi occultists. Himmler, as well as Hitler, became deeply interested in Tibetan Lamaism. He set up an occult training college at the Berlin section and ordered members of the SS leadership to attend courses there, especially in magic. As a result of his contacts with the group, Himmler set up the Nazi Occult Bureau. This incorporated into one organization of the Thule group, the Vril Society and the German branch of the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) - Aleister Crowley's magical order."
"When we see the smiling faces of international statesmen and religious leaders on the television or in the newspapers it is difficult to imagine that behind the diplomatic facade exists a very different world; a world of secret societies and occult fraternities peopled by shadowy figures who have often been obsessed with the pursuit of power. Since the days of the Pharoahs in ancient Egypt the occult has entangled the black arts of espionage, subversion and revolution in its web. Today the occult conspiracy still affects politics, although there are few who are aware of its influence even though those who control it are often well known faces and household names."(Michael Howard, The Occult Conspiracy)

Want to debunk a couple of things. Amado Crowley is most ASSUREDLY NOT Aleister Crowley's son. Not only does he place Crowley in locations that it has been demonstrated he was not at THOSE times, some being many years off but Crowley only had 1 child that survived to adulthood, Aleister Ataturk who died in the mid 90s, though his daughter joined the popular Ordo Templi Orientis in recent years (last two).
The OTO was actually "hijacked" from Crowley's real heir in a 1985 c.e. lawsuit when a low circuit Judge awarded the rights to the name and practice of the religion "Thelema" to a California Corporation called OTO as well. This corporation was founded by former Military Intelligence officer and Political Science expert Grady Louis McMurtry who had been friends with Crowley before Crowley's death in 1947. He had been granted limited power in the OTO by Crowley under the approval of Nazi Concentration Camp survivor Karl Germer, Crowley's successor apparent.
On his death bed, Germer had named a Brazilian, Marcelo Ramos Motta his heir to the legacy of Crowley. The OTO had all but shrivelled up and died, with Kenneth Grant operating his spurious Lodge of the OTO after having been expelled in 1955 and the members of the American Lodge, Agape LOdge, having drifted away outside of a small handful of members including Phyllis Seckler and Gabriel Montenegro. The Agape Lodge had been closed for years when Germer passed away.
Marcelo Motta was initiated into the OTO by Germer in 1956 and granted full rights and priveleges to the IX* of the Order. Strangely, in the 1985 civil suit the records of his membership, which McMUrtry and his group had written as having existed in the late 70s, had vanished and the log of members had had a name removed from its listings. The current membership continues to demonize Motta and claims he was never a member and that Germer, a man who had no time for initiation rites etc. would have observed proper protocol and brought Motta up through the grades properly when history indicates that Germer never made that practice and himself didn't understand the rituals and never went through or studied them. To counter this evidence, the small following of Motta (this author being one of the highest ranking members of the "REAL OTO" on the planet) counters with the evidence of letters written by Motta from positions of authority within the OTO on behalf of Mr. Germer.
As I said before, Kenneth grant had been expelled from the OTO in 1955 by Germer but continued a spurious Lodge. At one time he and Motta worked closely, until the early 1970s when they experienced a falling out.
The Lam Portrait was a result of Crowley Amalantrah Working of the 1917 period I believe. It was painted and used as the frontispiece of Crowley's Commentary on Blavatsky's Voice of the Silence. Crowley never put much stock in the painting, commented on it or anything outside of noting Grant's interest and that Crowley gave the painting to Grant as a gift.
Crowleyan ritual and sex magick no more involves human sacrifice than the sacrament of the Mass. Anybody practicing the actual sacrifice of human beings in a ritual such as Crowley describes is grossly misunderstanding his work and taking things about 100% too literally. Crowleyan sex magick involved the use of mantra and sex to produce changes in human consciousness in order to focus the Will in the desired direction. A form of self-hypnosis. The reference Crowley made to sacrificing a child in his works were references to the idea, as expressed in his Liber C vel Agape, that when a couple engages in sexual union, on some plane of existence, be it the Astral or material plane a child, or bud will, is created. This is not a reference to a physical child but a spiritual concept. When the magician performs sex magick, this "spirit" child is focused into the energy necessary to accomplish the working as opposed to physical impregnation. No children in the sense of a physical body etc. is sacrificed.
Now one aspect of the Crowleyan teaching is that of the Bloody Sacrifice that signals the transition of one Aeon into the next. These are a sequences of wars and tragedies, natural disasters that serve to alter the consciousness of the human race on a massive scale, preparing it for the next stage of evolution. Thelema is the next stage in that concept.
If you studied a bit more about Thelema, go beyond the more aggressive elements of the Third chapter and look at its manifesto for personal freedom of an unprecedented sort, a two edged sword of liberty and personal responsibility, then you will see that NOTHING about the current administration is Thelemic in any way, shape or form outside of the more aggressive elements of the Third Chapter. Reading the Vision and the Voice would also help you to understand that what the Bushes, Cheney etc are seeking to accomplish has nothing at all to do with Thelemic Doctrine as expressed in that series of Visions, which explains the concepts of the Black Lodge and the goals of the Great White Brotherhood. In fact, Bush and Cheney in their attempts to enslave the human race and control the world are furthering the agenda of the Black Lodge in that they are seeking to oppress. Thelema isn't about that. When you read "the slaves shall serve" in LIber Al you see only the connotations of that, you take it out of context with the rest of the book. You don't see the big picture of the book. The slaves shall serve references that those who CHOOSE to serve; let them serve. If they choose to remain outside of the practice of magick, that is their choice, don't try to force the royal art onto them.
When you see the sinister in Crowley's life, you fail to see that the deaths etc that surrounded him are no more sinister than your own life where in 72 years you will see friends commit suicide, be murdered, etc. You will see alcoholics etc. As the yellow press has covered Crowley's life though they have over emphasized and sensationalized these elements. Rose, his first wife was committed for her alcoholism. The modern yellow press sees this and embraces it as evidence of Crowley's depravity. What has this to do with Crowley? Rose was an alcoholic, addicted to absynthe, in the late Victorian era. Many people were comitted in that period for their addiction to absynthe. SHe also had a history of these problems BEFORE she met Aleister Crowley. Raoul Loveday, supposedly died after drinking cat's blood? Not even remotely true. One story, again, untrue because May, his wife, changed her story three times at least, was that he was chasing a cat to be used in a sacrifice and it scratched him and became seriously infected. No, the truth is that he drank from a well that Crowley had told him was contaminated. He contracted dissentary and died. The conditions at the Abbey in Cefalu were less than ideal.
Crowley allowed much of the yellow press to stand because it amused him but in recent times much of that bad press has started to part its curtains thanks to books like Do What Thou Wilt by Laurence Sutin and Perdurabo by Laurence Kacynzki.
The popular OTO has become a haven of the disenfranchised but also less than magickal society. The system of Thelema reduced to a religion as opposed to a system that can produce change and bring about personal inner plane contacts. This is sad really as it allows the masses to be more easily swayed. I only recently began to study the conspiracy theories and I can definitely see that if they are using what they THINK is Crowley's blueprint for the NEw Aeon but they are going to find that they were grossly in error when the time comes and the Aeon's final shedding of their Dying God mentality presents itself...

While there is much to be comended in Fra.: L's historical account, he does mention that Motta's membership in and hence eligibility to become the leader of, the OTO, is matter of dispute. If there is evidence, let it be produced.
The existing correspondence that I am familaiar with sugests Motta's entire lack of interest in the OTO until such time as the whole question of the dreaded copyrights came up. Previous to that Mottas focus was exclusively A.:A.:
The historian of magick will also note that the mundane courts have been a favored arena for the application of the Art for a few millenia now.

I'm searching for information on how to shoot and edit videos for a business idea, when I came upon your blog. This is a great blog you have.
Anyway the only place I've found for my business idea is here video tape to dvd. They have a great course on DVD's but it's little expensive for me at the moment.
I'm definitely going to bookmark you and come back
